Lu Reaches Finals in Second Consecutive Tournament

NORFOLK, VA. – The Pitt women’s tennis team saw success from freshman Jocelyn Lu, as she reached the finals in her bracket at the Sergio Tacchini Invitational hosted by Norfolk State. Several other Panthers earned first and second-round victories in the tournament.
Lu advanced to the finals of the B-1 bracket after defeating three consecutive opponents in straight sets, including a semifinal victory over Yana Maurina (Temple) 6-4, 6-2. In the finals, Lu was ousted by Vera Shkundina (Kennesaw State) 6-2, 6-3.
In other singles’ action, freshman Taylor Washington had a great showing, earning a spot in the semifinals of the D-2 singles bracket. In the quarterfinals, Washington outplayed Amanda Halstrom (Delaware) 7-6(3), 6-0 before eventually slipping to Tess Lagerkyist (Kennesaw State) in the semifinals 6-1, 6-3.
In D-1 singles, freshman Brittaney Russell reached the quarterfinals after posting a shutout in straight sets over Caitlyn Olsen (Navy) 6-0, 6-0. Washington then fell to Kelly Domingo (Delaware) 6-2, 6-3.
As a team, Lu and freshman Kimmy Borza reached the finals of the B-2 Doubles bracket after defeating Alex Sebia/Vikcy Sekley (Georgetown) 8-3. In the championship match, the duo lost to Katelyn Stokes/Alyssa Works in a close 8-6 affair.
Russell and Taylor teamed in doubled. They won 8-3 over Morgan Kiser/Kari Pope (Army) to reach the semifinals in the D-2 bracket, before falling to Amanda Halstrom/Olivia Heim (Delaware) 8-5.
The Panthers conclude fall action on Friday, Oct. 22, when the squad travels back to Norfolk, Va. to play in the ITA Regional Indoor Championship.
