Women's tennis Earns Shutout In Season Opener

ALTOONA, Pa.—Pitt’s women’s tennis team earned the perfect win in its first match of the season, defeating St. Francis (PA), 7-0, at the Summit Athletic Club. It was just the fifth time in program history that Pitt recorded a sweep in its season opener.
The Panthers started strongly, breezing through all three doubles matches. First, senior Elizabeth Adams and sophomore Gabrielle Catanzariti were stingy in an 8-0 win over Tina Miller and Laura Husband at No. 1 doubles. In another shutout, the No. 3 double pair of sophomore Karma Parbhu and freshman Brittney Russell followed suit by winning 8-0 over Rose Clark and Maya Ranchard.
At No. 2 doubles, freshmen Jocelyn Lu and Kimmy Borza won convincingly in an 8-2 victory over Alex Foty and Devynn Sarver.
In singles actions, Adams earned her second victory of the day and etched her name on step deeper into the history book. She now ranks third on the all-time wins list after garnering her 126th career victory over Miller (7-5, 6-1) in No. 1 singles. Adams, who is also No. 3 on the career singles wins list (67), is just nine wins shy of tying Carlie Smith’s mark of 135 wins (76 singles) for second place all-time.
Playing in the No. 2 slot, Catanzariti defeating Husband (6-2, 6-0), while Borza and Russell earned 6-1, 6-0 victories in No. 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
In No. 5 singles, Parbhu earned the lone shutout in straight sets. Two courts over, Lu won her first set 6-2, and was leading 3-0 when her opponent retired due to injury.
Pitt’s last season-opening sweep was against Bucknell on Feb. 9, 2007.
The Panthers continue action this week with three more matches. First, the squad faces Penn State in State College, Pa. on Wednesday, Jan. 26 at 4 p.m. Pitt then travels to Buffalo, N.Y. for matches against St. John’s (Saturday at 10:30 a.m.) and the host Bulls (Sunday at 11 a.m.).
