Doubles Point Lifts Pitt In Win

STORRS, Conn.-Earning the doubles point proved to be the deciding bout, as the University of Pittsburgh women's tennis team defeated Big East foe Connecticut, 4-3. The Panthers improve to 3-3 in the conference and 11-5 on the year.

Not knowing what the outcome of the other matches were, junior Annie Davies (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) and senior Becky Emmers (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) recorded a convincing 8-2 victory in the No. 3 doubles slot, their sixth win of the season.

The duo of freshman Kristy Borza (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) and sophomore Leah Friedman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) posted an 8-5 win for the Panthers.

The team of senior Emily Hughes (Waynesburg, Pa./Canevin Catholic) and sophomore Carlie Smith (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) dropped a nail-biting 9-8 (5) match to the Huskies No. 2 team.

In singles action, Davies, Friedman and Borza all earned two-set wins.

Both Hughes and Borza have won five of the last six singles matches.
