Another Conference Win For Women's Tennis

VILLANOVA, Pa.--The University of Pittsburgh women's tennis team posted another Big East win to its season total with a 5-2 victory over Villanova, this past weekend. Pitt is now 14-5 on the season and 5-3 in the conference, and is enjoying its best season since 1998, when the team was 14-12 overall.

Both senior Emily Hughes (Waynesburg, Pa./Canevin Catholic) and sophomore Carlie Smith (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) played to three sets in their singles victories. Hughes won a nail-biting 7-6 (4) in the first set, but was shutout in game two 6-0. In the third contest, Hughes pushed for the win at 6-2. Smith on the other hand fell 6-1 in her first set, forcing a third match with a 6-3 win in game two.

Hughes earned her 94^th career win in the contest, while she, Smith and freshman Christie D'achille (Gibsonia, Pa./North Allegheny) are all riding a three-game win streak in singles.

Pitt earned the doubles point, taking two matches. Junior Annie Davies (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) and senior Becky Emmers (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) teamed in the No. 3 spot and continued their nine-game win streak and improve to 10-4 on the season.

Davies, who also won in singles, improved to 87-62 in her career with the wins.

Pitt will salute its seniors, Emmers and Hughes, on Wednesday, April 12, when the Panthers face Duquesne at 1 p.m. at Club 4 Life in Monroeville, Pa.
