Women's Tennis Falls In Regular-Season Finale

PITTSBURGH-- The University of Pittsburgh women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Duquesne, ending the regular season with a record of 14-6 overall and a 5-3 mark in the Big East. Despite the loss, the Panthers' season will continue since the squad is awaiting a seed in the Big East Championships.

Although Pitt dropped the doubles point, all three teams played very well, while freshman Kristy Borza (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) and sophomore Leah Friedman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) turned in the lone winning set, 8-4.

Senior Emily Hughes (Waynesburg, Pa./Canevin Catholic) and sophomore Carlie Smith (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) played to a close 8-6 bout, but were unable to earn a victory for the Panthers.

In the No. 3 match-up, junior Annie Davies (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) and senior Becky Emmers (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) battled back from being down 4-1 early, but were outlasted by the Dukes in another 8-6 tally.

Moving into singles action, Borza finished early with two quick sets by scores of 6-0 and 6-2, while freshman Christie D'achille (Gibsonia, Pa.) picked up the second point for Pitt in the No. 6 slot. D'Achille defeated Abby Ball of Duquesne in two sets by scores of 6-4 and 6-2.

Despite Davies and Smith forcing a third set in their matches, Duquesne earned wins in the other four matches.

The leadership of Emmers and Hughes earned Pitt a trip to the Big East Championships starting Thursday, April 20 and lasting through Saturday, April 22. Pitt will find out its seeding and opponent in the next few days.
