Doubles Point Lifts Women's Tennis Past YSU

POLAND, Ohio--Pitt's women's tennis team earns a critical doubles point in a 4-3 win over Youngstown State. The Panthers improve to 9-4 on the season, while Head Coach George Dieffenbach earned his 250th win in the contest.

The Panthers won the deciding point in doubles, earning wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. Freshman Kristy Borza (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) and sophomore Leah Friedman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) teamed in the No. 1 spot and improved their record to 14-6, after an 8-3 victory over the Penguins.

The team of junior Annie Davies (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) and senior Becky Emmers (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) combined in their eighth match of the year and posted an 8-5 win. Davies and Emmers are 4-4 on the year.

Three Panthers then recorded wins in singles action. Sophomore Carlie Smith (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) dropped the first set of her match, 6-4, but came back to win the next two 6-1, 6-2. Smith now holds an 18-6 singles record on the season.

Borza garnered her fourth shutout and 19^th win of the season with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Emily Thoyer of Youngstown State.

Senior Emily Hughes (Waynesburg, Pa./Canevin Catholic), playing in the No. 5 slot, defeated the Penguins' Michelle Fulery 6-3, 7-6 (3). Hughes improved to 13-8 this season and 52-31 in her singles career.

Dieffenbach has been at the helm of the women's tennis team since 1981 and has complied a 250-213 record over his tenure.

Pitt travels down the road to Carnegie Mellon on Tuesday, March 28 for a 4 p.m. match.
