Panthers Drop 80-63 Decision To West Virginia

Morgantown, W.Va.-The University of Pittsburgh women's basketball could not overcome 24 turnovers as it fell to West Virginia, 80-63, Saturday afternoon at the WVU Coliseum. The Panthers dropped to 1-5 in the Big East, while the Mountaineers improved to 3-3.
Brooke Stewart poured in 20 points for Pittsburgh, including four 3-pointers, while Laine Selwyn notched her third double-double of the season, tallying 17 points and 10 rebounds. Haley Harguth added 12 points for the Panthers.
West Virginia came out on fire and raced out to a 27-15 lead at the 7:26 mark of the first half. After Pittsburgh pulled to within nine points, 30-21, the Mountaineers entered the locker room with a 41-26 lead as Kate Bulger hit her fifth 3-pointer of the half with six seconds remaining in the stanza.
The Panthers hit only 29 percent of its shots from the field in the half, while WVU connected on 44 percent.
In the second half, Pittsburgh trimmed the advantage to 43-36 by the 15:59 mark, sparked by a 10-2 run. However, that would be as close as the Panthers would get as they dropped their third consecutive contest.
For the game, Pittsburgh managed to knock down just 30 percent of its shots and committed 24 turnovers. The Panthers won the war on the glass, 46-32, but WVU added 21 assists and nine blocked shots to aide in the victory.
Bulger led all scorers with 24 points, including six 3-pointers, while Yolanda Paige (14) and Sherell Sowho (17) also tallied double digits in scoring. Paige added a game-high 13 assists for the Mountaineers.
Pittsburgh is back in action on Wednesday as it hosts Georgetown, which is the only team the Panthers have defeated in the Big East this year. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Fitzgerald Field House.
