Panthers Power Past Central Connecticut, 68-43

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's basketball team rolled past Central Connecticut, 68-43 on Monday evening inside the Petersen Events Center.
Mikayla Johnson and Theresa Hagans Jr. led the Panthers with 17 points apiece, as Hagans Jr. also tallied five assists, four rebounds and a career-high four steals.
Fatima Diakhate added eight rebounds and a career-high eight blocks, becoming the first Panther to record eight blocks in a game since Khadija Faye matched the mark last January against North Carolina.
Carla Viegas finished with six points on a pair of three-pointers and grabbed three steals to tie her career high. Viegas has made at least two three-point field goals in every game that she has played in thus far.
Lauren Rust contributed a career-high five assists in the victory, along with six rebounds, four steals and two points.
How It Happened
Pitt opened strong, taking an 11-6 lead after the first 10 minutes behind six early points from Johnson. The Panthers extended their momentum with a 12-0 run through the first seven minutes of the second quarter, during which Johnson reached double figures with a shot from beyond the arc.
A three-point play from Megan Hollingsworth pushed Pitt to its largest lead of the half at 20 points, and the Panthers entered halftime up 17.
The pressure continued in the third, as Pitt used a 16-2 run to open the quarter, fueled by 10 points from Hagans Jr.
Back-to-back buckets from Diakhate and a Hollingsworth layup stretched Pitt's lead to a game-high 29 points in the fourth. Angel Jones and Johnson each went 2-for-2 in the final frame to seal the Panthers' sixth win of the season.
