PITTSBURGH-Junior Laine Selwyn tallied her third consecutive double-double for the University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team, but that was not enough as the Panthers fell to Georgetown, 73-56, Wednesday night at Fitzgerald Field House. Pittsburgh dropped to 6-12 overall and 1-6 in the Big East, while the Hoyas improved to 10-8 and 2-5 in conference play.
Selwyn finished with 16 points and 10 assists, capping her third consecutive double-double and fourth on the year. The Coral Springs, Fla., native connected on 6-of-12 shots from the field and also tallied six rebounds and five steals.
Brooke Stewart (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) also notched double digits in scoring with 13 points, while freshman Haley Harguth (Beaverton, Ore./Beaverton) continued her 3-point barrage with four shots from behind the arc en route to 12 points.
After struggling early on and falling behind 18-8 at the 8:48 mark, Pittsburgh responded with a 13-4 spurt to pull within one point, 22-21. However, Mary Lisicky drained a half-court shot as time expired in the first half to stretch the Hoya lead to 29-24 at intermission.
Pittsburgh came out on fire in the second half, taking a 34-31 advantage thanks to two 3-pointers by Harguth. Once again, Georgetown fired back and embarked on a game-clinching 25-9 run to grab a 56-43 lead. The Panthers would not get closer than nine points the rest of the contest and dropped their fourth consecutive outing.
For the game, the Hoyas dominated the glass as they outrebounded the Pittsburgh, 52-31, including pulling down 23 offensive boards. The Panthers shot just 35 percent from the field while Georgetown managed to hit 46 percent of its shots.
Zsuzsanna Horvath totaled a career-high 24 points on 11-of-17 shooting to lead the Hoyas. Nok Duany (12), Lesley Walker (11) and Mary Lisicky (10) each posted double-digit scoring efforts as well.
Pittsburgh looks to snap its skid on Saturday as it hosts Syracuse at 7 p.m. The Panthers follow the men's basketball game between Pittsburgh and Georgetown, which tips off at 4 p.m. in Fitzgerald Field House.
