Pittsburgh Falls To No. 24 Boston College, 81-57

PITTSBURGH-Despite career-highs of 21 points and seven 3-pointers from freshman Haley Harguth, the University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team dropped an 81-57 decision to No. 24 Boston College Saturday afternoon at Fitzgerald Field House. The Panthers fell to 6-9 overall and 1-3 in the Big East, while the Eagles improved to 12-3, 3-1 in the conference.
Harguth (Beaverton, Ore./Beaverton) tallied 12 of her points, including three 3-pointers, in the second half. For the game, the freshman connected on 7-of-13 shots from behind the arc and totaled two rebounds and two steals.
Junior Laine Selwyn (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs) added 17 points, eight assists and six rebounds for Pittsburgh, while senior Bettina Love (Rochester, N.Y./Edison Tech) contributed 10 points and a season-best four blocked shots.
After opening with a 12-9 lead with just under 13 minutes remaining in the first half, Pittsburgh went cold from the field and found itself behind 33-20 with 29 seconds to go. After Harguth fired in her third trey of the half, Boston College gained a 35-23 halftime advantage as Brianne Stepherson drilled a jumper with four seconds remaining.
In the second half, the Panthers used two layups by Love and another 3-pointer by Harguth and trimmed the lead to nine points, 39-30, at the 16:59 mark. However, the Eagles responded and with eight minutes left in the contest, Pittsburgh found itself down 25 points (62-37) and would never get closer than 18 points the rest of the game.
Pittsburgh managed to shoot just 35 percent (21 of 60) from the field for the contest while Boston College hit 48 percent (30 of 63) of its shots. Also, the Panthers finished with 26 turnovers compared to the Eagles' 14.
Stepherson led Boston College with 18 points, while Kim Mackie and Jessalyn Deveny finished with 16 and 12 points, respectively.
Pittsburgh is back in action on Tuesday when it travels to Rutgers. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Louis Brown Athletic Center. The Eagles head home to host Providence on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
