Pitt Drops Conference Opener to Cal, 2-1

PITTSBURGH — The Pitt women's soccer team (4-3-2, 0-1-0 ACC) came up short in its conference opener Thursday night, dropping a 2-1 to decision to Cal at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
The Golden Bears (4-1-4, 1-0-0 ACC) capitalized early, opening the scoring in the 22nd minute. Cal doubled its advantage in the 36th minute, taking a 2-0 lead into the locker room.
The Panthers responded with renewed intensity in the second half, pulling one back in the 68th minute. Junior defender Sage Stelzer delivered a cross into the box, where freshman forward Katie Ellermeyer finished with a one-touch strike into the back of the net. The goal marked Ellermeyer's fifth of the season, continuing to lead the team in scoring.
Pitt outshot Cal 4-2 in the second half, delivering three shots on target. Despite the momentum, the Panthers were unable to find the equalizer before the final whistle. Both teams finished the contest with eight shots.
Ellermeyer led all players with three shots, including two on target. Freshman midfielder Ellie Rowlands added two shots of her own while junior goalkeeper Abby Reisz recorded two saves in net.

The Panthers conclude their six-match homestand on Sunday, Sept. 14, with a matchup against No. 3 Stanford. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
