
Pitt Splits Doubleheader with Louisville in Regular Season Finale

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt softball team battled through a long day of weather delays as they split a doubleheader with Louisville in the regular season finale, Friday at Vartabedian Field.
The Panthers scored nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning en route to a 12-2 run-rule victory over the Cardinals in game one. Pitt and Louisville battled through nine innings during game two, but ultimately the Panthers dropped to the Cardinals, 8-5.
Game One – Pitt 12, Louisville 2
Louisville got on the board early with a Bri Despines RBI double and later scored on a play at the plate to go up 2-0 before the game went into a lightning delay. The Panthers came out strong after almost an hour weather delay, getting two quick outs to end the inning and strand a Louisville runner.
The Panthers hit a pair of solo home runs in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 2-2. Tieley Vaughn got the Panthers on the board with a solo shot to left field and Camryn Murphy followed with a two-out home run to left field.
After giving up two runs in the top of the first, Gwen Sparks held the Cardinals scoreless through the next four frames. The right-handed pitcher retired Camryn Lookadoo on strikeout to strand two runners in the top of the fifth and retired the side in the top of the sixth.
The Panthers and Louisville were each held scoreless through three innings before Kylie Griggs got the go ahead run, a lead off home run in the bottom of the fifth to give the Panthers a 3-2 lead.
Pitt scored nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning en route to earning the run-rule victory. Amanda "Tuta" Ramirez started the rally with a lead off single and Ana Hernandez reached on a throwing error to put the runners on second and third. Desirae Martinez drove in a run on a sac bun and Ahmari Braden made the score 5-2 with a single through the left side. Vaughn hit a single just fair on the left field line to score two more runs. Kaitlyn Brannstrom and Murphy each hit an RBI single to make the score 8-2 with one out. Ana Hernandez called the game with a three-run home run to center field
Sparks (7-6) earned the win after tossing 6.0 innings, holding Louisville to two earned runs on five hits, with three strikeouts and issuing three walks.
Game Two – Pitt 5, Louisville 8
The second game of the day was delayed over two hours due to lightning and rain, but the Panthers and Cardinals battled through nine innings to close out regular season play.
The Cardinals made a pair of diving defensive catches to keep the Panthers off base and hold the 1-0 lead heading into the third inning.
Louisville extended the lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning with an RBI single and a bases loaded hit by pitch. The Panthers bounced back in the fourth and fifth innings, combining to score five runs on seven hits after being held without a hit through the opening three frames.
The Panthers matched Louisville's two runs in the bottom of the inning, beginning with Tieley Vaughn's solo home run over the scoreboard to make it a 3-1 game. Ana Hernandez followed with a double to make it a one-run game. Pitt added three more runs in the fifth to take the 5-4 advantage.
Louisville tied the game in the top of the sixth and scored three runs in the top of the ninth to claim the series and clinched a bid the ACC Tournament.

The Panthers will wait to see if they qualify for the ACC Championship Tournament, hosted by Boston College form May 7-10. Conference regular season action wraps up on Sunday, May 4.
