Panthers Drop a Pair of Games at Houston

HOUSTON – The Pitt softball team dropped two games during the second day of the Easton Classic II at Cougar Softball Stadium, Saturday. The Panthers fell to UIW, 16-10, in the first game and dropped a hard-fought game to Houston, 3-4.
Kaitlyn Brannstrom anchored the Panthers offense by going 2-for-6 at the plate with six RBI and a grand slam and Tieley Vaughn finished the day going 3-for-7 with a double and an RBI.
Pitt 10, UIW 16
The Cardinals got on the board early with a solo home run with two outs in the top of the first inning. Kyra Pittman retired the side in each the second and third innings, allowing just two hits and a homerun through the opening 3.0 innings.
The Panthers offense came alive in the bottom of the third as they scored four runs off three doubles to take a 4-1 lead over the Cardinals. Saleyna Daniel got the Panthers on the board with a double down the left field line, scoring Kylie Griggs who drew a leadoff walk to get on base. Camryn Murphy followed with a two-run double to give the Panthers a 3-1 lead and Tieley Vaughn hit another double in the next at bat to cap off the inning with four runs.
UIW led off the top of the fourth with a solo home run and followed with a two-run double to tie the game 4-4.
Brannstrom highlighted a six run fourth inning for the Panthers with a grand slam to give Pitt an 8-4 lead. Murphy hit a single through the left side and the Panthers drew back-to-back walks before Ana Hernandez hit a double to score two more runs to cap off the inning with a 10-4 advantage.
The Cardinal's offense exploded in the top of the fifth inning, scoring 10 runs on seven hits to take a 14-10 lead over the Panthers. UIW added two more runs in the seventh inning to secure the win.
Pitt 3, Houston 4
Houston struck first with a two-run homer in the first inning to take an early lead over the Panthers. After a scoreless second inning, the Panthers tied the game in the top of the third.
Kylie Griggs drew another walk and Tieley Vaughn singled to the shortstop to give the Panthers' runners at first and second. Saleyna Daniel reached on a fielding error by the third baseman, but Griggs was able to reach home on the play. In the next at-bat, Vaughn was able to score the second run after Kaitlyn Brannstrom drove in the run to tie the game with a groundout to second base.
Houston took the lead by scoring two runs in the fourth inning, an RBI single and taking advantage of a wild pitch to go up 4-2. The Panthers drew two walks in the top of the fifth and Brannstrom made it a one-run game with an RBI single through the left side.
Griggs was hit by a pitch and Vaughn beat out a bunt single to get two runners on first and second with no outs in the top of the seventh. The Cougars ended the game on a triple play on a Daniel ground ball to third base.
