PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh women's soccer team (8-2-1, 1-1-1 ACC) completed their ACC home opener against No. 10 Notre Dame (6-1-2, 2-0-1 ACC) with a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
Pitt put together a strong 90 minutes of play today at home. The defensive back held up a dominant wall to Notre Dame's offense as they only allowed four shots on goal in the first half.
The Panthers created momentum, as both Chloe Minas and Amanda West placed shots on goal within the first 45 minutes of play.
Both the Panthers and the Fighting Irish went into the locker room scoreless. Pitt held a fighting edge at the half with 7-6 shots, 4-3 shots on goal, three saves and four corners.
Starting off in the second half, the Panthers continued to create scoring opportunities. Notre Dame and Pitt went back and forth, up and down the field, attempting to place the first shot on goal. The Fighting Irish, Kristina Lynch, made a path for herself directly to the goal, going head to head with Ellie Breech. Lynch was able to put Notre Dame on the board first after finding the bottom center of the goal.
The Panthers didn't let this diminish their energy as they continued to fight. At the 82nd minute, freshman Deborah Abiodun headed the ball into the back of the net off of Keera Melenhorst's corner kick, completing the equalizer.
Just moments before the end of the 90 minutes of play, Samiah Phiri posted a strong shot at the bottom right of the net, trying to take the lead for Pitt, but was saved by Notre Dame.
Pitt completed the matchup with 15 shots, seven shots on goal, and 12 corner kicks.
