PITTSBURGH – A late comeback fell short for the Pitt women's soccer team Sunday at Ambrose Urbanic Field, dropping the match to Florida State, 2-1. Sofia Doheny scored the 81st minute goal for the Panthers with attempts at an equalizer from Talyn Guthrie and Lola Abraham landing just off target in the dwindling minutes of regulation.
FSU (7-1-3, 3-0-2 ACC) took a lead in the 16th minute, capitalizing on chaos inside the 18-yard box. An initial shot from the Seminoles outside the box caromed off the cross bar and to the feet of another Seminole forward. The second shot was saved by Elli Johnson but the third was outside the Panther keeper's reach to put Florida State ahead, 1-0.
Abraham had two looks at the goal following the Seminole's goal, but both attempts landed just off target.
The Panthers (7-7-2, 1-6-1 ACC) came out of the half with an attack mindset, landing two shots in the opening three minutes. A header from Doheny hit the crossbar and the second look from Celine Ottah sailed over the goal ending the offensive threat from the Panthers.
Florida State doubled its lead in the 54th minute. A pass across the net found a charging Seminoles forward at the back post who finished off the opportunity.
Pitt started to build momentum offensively again, looking to make a comeback as time wound down. Guthrie had a dangerous look at goal in the 65th minute, but the FSU keeper came up with the stop.
Pitt finally broke through in the 81st minute of action as Doheny cleaned up an initial shot from Sage Stelzer that hit off the left post of the goal. The goal marked the fourth of the season for the senior forward as she continues to add to her career-high goal total in a season.
The Panthers continued searching for the equalizer as the final 10 minutes ticked down on the clock. Abraham nearly leveled the score with a shot from the top of the box with seven minutes remaining however her shot was just wide of the post.
Pitt outshot the Seminoles 14-9 with five chances on goal to FSU's four.
