Pitt Drops Game Two Against No. 2 Wake Forest
4/22/2023 7:48:00 PM | Baseball
Pittsburgh -- The Panthers (17-20, 8-10 ACC) drop game two of their three-game ACC set against No. 2 Wake Forest (33-6, 15-4 ACC) Saturday afternoon by a final score of 23-4. Pitt's pitching staff struggled to find the zone, while their offense struggled to get on base, as they were held hitless through 4.1 innings.
Two of Pitt's four runs this afternoon came off the bats of Kyle Hess and Noah Martinez, as both hit solo shots in game two. Hess put his into the trees in right-center in the fifth inning as Martinez landed his in an identical spot in the bottom of the seventh. For Hess that was his fifth long ball of the season, he has reached base safely in 18 of his last 19 games. Martinez finished the day 2-4, and now has a team high 14-game hit streak. CJ Funk and Brett Heckert both recorded hits as well. With his double in the seventh inning, CJ Funk has now reached base safely in 34 consecutive games. He is behind only Jack Anderson who, with a walk today, extends his team-leading consecutive on-base streak to 39 games.
Despite the large deficit, this team refused to quit. They put together multiple good at-bats in the final inning and tacked on two runs in the bottom of the ninth. Anthony Lasala worked a bases loaded walk to bring home Cameron Barto who led off the inning with a pinch-hit walk. Sky Duff came up in the next at-bat and brought home Johnny Long III from third on an RBI groundout to first base.
The Demon Deacons took the lead very early in game two and never took their foot off the gas. They finished with 21 hits in total and scored at least one run in every frame. Justin Johnson had a career day at the plate, as he went 5-6 with two home runs, a double, a triple, and eight RBI.
The Pitt pitching staff struggled all day to find the zone, they allowed a season-high 12 free passes before this one wrapped up. Every member of their staff offering at least one walk on the day.
The Panthers will look to take the series tomorrow afternoon in their rubber-match against No. 2 Wake Forest, first pitch slated for 1 p.m. RHP Kyle Mosley will be Pitt's Sunday starter and is set to be opposed by LHP Josh Hartle from Wake.
