Pittsburgh, PA -- The Pitt Panthers (17-21, 8-11 ACC) fell to No. 2 Wake Forest (34-6 16-4 ACC) in the series rubber-match at Charles L. Cost Field on Sunday by a score of 17-1.  For the second straight game the Panthers struggled to get on base against arguably the one of the best pitching staffs in the country.

First baseman Noah Martinez continued to be one the Panthers most consistent contributors on offense, he drove in Pitt's first and only run today on an RBI single up the middle in the third inning. He leads the team in both hits (44) and RBI (39) this season and has recorded a hit in nine of his last ten games.

With his double off the left field wall in the bottom of the sixth inning, CJ Funk now has the team's longest on-base streak at 35 consecutive games of reaching base safely, he finished the day 1-4. This year's record was previously held by Jack Anderson, who had reached base in every single game this season but failed to reach today in the series finale against Wake. Kyle Hess and Justin Acal both recorded hits in this one as well, Hess's single improved his team best batting average to .336.

Things looked positive for the Panthers in the top half of the first inning. Kyle Mosley sat down the Demon Deacons in order rather swiftly, that included an inning ending strikeout of Nick Kurtz who went 4-5 with 9 RBI in game two of the series yesterday.

However, as they did yesterday, Wake Forest got the scoring started in the early frames putting up a five-spot in the second. They did so by hitting grand slam for the second straight day, this time by catcher Bennett Lee. They tacked on another run in the top of the third inning on a Nick Kurtz long ball to make it 6-0 Wake.

The Panthers got that run back, and their only run of the game, in the bottom half of that inning. Sky Duff and Jayden Melendez both walked to start the inning, on a combined eight pitches. Noah Martinez then came up and brought home Duff on a single up the middle into center field to score Pitt's first and only run of this ballgame. Wake led 6-1 after three innings.

Pitt would threaten in the bottom half of the sixth. Kyle Hess hit a ball through the first baseman's legs to reach base safely in 19 of his last 20 games. CJ Funk came up and hit a double off the left-field wall, putting runners on the corners with two outs. The Panthers pinch-hit the lefthanded hitting Carlos Martinez for left fielder Caleb Sturtevant, he would groundout to end the inning and the threat.

The Demon Deacons scored 11 more runs in the final four innings to officially put this game out of reach for the Panthers, as they would fall 17-1.

Pitt returns to Charles L. Cost Field this Friday April 28th as they host the California Golden Bears in a three-game nonconference series. It is alumni weekend for the Pitt Baseball family, we will be honoring our alumni during Friday's game, first pitch set for 6 PM.
