
Panthers Dominate Backyard Brawl

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh gymnastics team (6-6, 0-0 EAGL) posted their highest team score against rival West Virginia in program history at the Backyard Brawl Friday night in the Fitzgerald Field House.
The Panthers swept the podium, securing the first-place titles in all four events and the all-around. Sophomore Sidney Washington and freshman Kennedy Duke secured the first-place title on vault with their scores of a 9.800. Jordyn Ewing placed first on bars – earning a 9.950. Hallie Copperwheat and Reyna Garvey tied for first place on both beam and floor with their scores of 9.925 and 9.875, respectively. Copperwheat claimed the all-around first-place title with her performances tonight.
"I am really happy with how our team bounced back from our previous performances on the road," said head coach Samantha Snider. "It was great to be back in front of our home crowd and be able to compete in the Fitzgerald Field House again. We are excited to build and use this momentum from tonight and bring it with us as we compete at Denver this Sunday."
The Panthers topped the WVU Mountaineers, 195.200, with their 196.550 overall team score. This is Pitt's highest score against WVU since March 9, 2004, when the team posted a 196.525.
VAULT
The Panthers started the evening's event off on vault. Washington and Duke finished at the top with their score of 9.800 – tying for the first-place title. This was a new career-high for Duke. Copperwheat was not far behind them with her score of 9.750 – en route to the all-around. Pitt finished the first rotation with 48.725 overall.
BARS
Pitt matched the all-time program record on bars tonight – earning a 49.400 overall. Ewing set a new personal high and earned the first-place title with her score of a 9.950. Freshman Natalia Pawlak was not far behind with her 9.925 – earning a new career-high. All Panthers posted scores of a 9.725 or higher on the second rotation.
BEAM
Garvey and Copperwheat tied for the first-place title on beam – posting a 9.925. This was a new career-high for Copperwheat. Senior Christina Weiss and Duke both had strong performances -each setting new personal records with their 9.775. No Panther scored lower than a 9.750 – helping the team earn 49.150 in the third rotation.
FLOOR
The Panthers finished this evening's event on floor. Garvey and Copperwheat both finished at the top again – posting a 9.875 for their routines. Copperwheat completed the all-around with her score of 39.400 – earning her the first-place title overall. Senior Nay'yarrah Winder earned a 9.850 – a new career-high. Pitt finished the rotation with a 49.275 overall – the second highest rotation of the night.

Pitt will travel to Denver, CO for a quad meet against Denver, Air Force, and George Washington on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. MST.
