
No. 20 Pitt Women’s Soccer Upsets No. 3 North Carolina, 2-1, to Make Program History

The Panthers Advance to ACC Semifinals
CHAPEL HILL, NC – The University of Pittsburgh women's soccer team made history tonight at Dorrance Field as they secured their spot in the 2023 Ally ACC Championship semifinals after upsetting No. 3 North Carolina, 2-1. This is the first time in program history that the Panthers have secured a win over the Tar Heels.
The Panthers came into the matchup ready for it all. Pitt placed the first shot on goal of the night. Deborah Abiodun tried to secure the first points for the Panthers, but the UNC goalie made the save. Abiodun produced the most shots in the first half – posting three shots with two on target.
Landy Mertz was controlling the left side the in the first half – posting a strong attempt to score from the top of the box but found the UNC goalie's hands.
Pitt went into the locker room with the advantage in shots (8-5), shots on goal (3-2), and corner kicks (3-2).
Coming back for the second half, the Panthers were ready for more. Pitt placed four shots with two on target in the first 20 minutes of play of the second half.
At the 72nd minute, Ellie Coffield put the Panthers on the board first after heading in goal off of Mertz's assist.
The Tar Heels equalized the board moments later to put the scores at 1-1.
Pitt continued to hold the majority of the possession for the remainder of the regulation – finding their way into overtime.
At the end of the first period of overtime, Amanda West secured the second goal for the Panthers – heading in the ball off of Mertz and Sarah Schupansky's assists.
Pitt continued to dominate the field in the final period of the evening, keeping the Tar Heels from attempting any scoring opportunities.
The Panthers completed the night with 19-14 shots, 8-6 shots on goal and 9-5 corner kicks.
UP NEXT
The Panthers are heading to Cary, NC to compete in the semifinal round of the ACC Championships on Thursday, Nov. 2nd. Pitt will face against No. 1 seed Florida State with the first kick scheduled for 8 PM.
