PITTSBURGH – The Pitt softball team defeated Saint Francis (PA), 3-1, in a midweek non-conference contest Wednesday afternoon at Vartabedian Field.
NEWS & NOTES
Saint Francis (20-13) got on the board first with its lone run in the top of the third off a one out bases loaded walk. Muraskin limited the damage to just the one run as a fielder's choice and a pop-out finished the frame.
Pitt (13-16) answered in the bottom half of the inning with a productive out from freshman Haylie Brunson. Brunson grounded out to the pitcher, but the speed of senior Yvonne Whaley from third base made the throw from the out at first not in time as she slid home to tie it 1-1.
Muraskin registered a 1-2-3 fourth inning and finished the day throwing 4.0 innings with five strikeouts, one hit, one earned and three walks. In her last 10 innings thrown, she has allowed two earned, six hits and struck out seven. Drogemuller came on in the top of the fifth and retired the side in both the fifth and sixth innings.
In the bottom of the sixth, junior Kayla Lane reached on an error as the first at-bat of the frame. Drapola smacked a ball into the left center field gap, scoring Lane from first to put Pitt up 2-1. Whaley advanced Drapola to third with a fielder's choice and freshman Kylie Griggs reached via a throwing error, scoring Drapola for an insurance run and a 3-1 advantage.
The Red Flash started the top of the seventh with a single to right center but before it went to the wall, sophomore Cami Compson gathered it and threw out the runner trying to stretch a single into a double. A strikeout and groundout ended the game as Pitt won its second straight at home.
Whaley went 2-for-3 with a walk. She has eight hits, a double and three runs scored in her last five games.
Pitt stays at home for three games with No. 18/17 Clemson starting Friday afternoon at 5 PM. Live coverage of the game can be found on the ACC Network.
