Pitt Splits DH in Final Regular Season Home Stand

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt softball team split its final two games of the series versus Boston College Friday evening, winning game one 7-4 before falling 7-3 in game two.
NEWS & NOTES
Game One
Boston College scored early as an error sent two runs across in the top of the first. Pitt tied the game up in the third inning as senior Yvonne Whaley hit a two-run home run to left center, her second in the past three games. Muraskin struck out the side in the top of the fourth, setting up the Panthers to take the lead in the bottom of the frame.
Pitt tallied five runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth as freshman Rachael Fuerst hit a two-run homer to center and junior Bailey Drapola notched a three-run triple to center, both with two outs. The Panthers led 7-2 after the fourth inning.
The Eagles gained two back with a two-run homer to left center off the bat of Ellie Mataya in top of the fifth. Freshman Kendall Brown came on to pitch after the home run and allowed only two hits and struck out one in three innings of work, securing a nine-out save for the first save of her career.
Drapola went a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk and three RBI while Whaley went 2-for-2 with two walks and two RBI. Muraskin earned the victory, going four innings with four strikeouts.
Game Two
Pitt (14-21, 2-14 ACC) scored early as senior Sarah Seamans hit an opposite field home run to right in the bottom of the first, scoring Whaley to make it 2-0.
Boston College (19-20, 5-13 ACC) tied it up at two all with a homer to left center in the top of the fourth inning. It added four runs in the top of the fifth as back-to-back fielders' choices brought in one run each followed by a sac fly and a reach on error scoring one run apiece.
A double down the left field line scored one run for the Eagles in the top of the seventh as they led 7-2 into the final frame. Pitt made it interesting, as sophomore Cami Compson hit a solo home run to center (7-3) and back-to-back one out singles put runners on second and first. A fielder's choice and a groundout ended the threat and the Panthers fell 7-3.
Pitt outhit the Eagles 7-6 with seven different players accounting to the hit total.
Pitt next begins a stretch of eight-straight games on the road Tuesday at Bucknell. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
NEWS & NOTES
- The team honored graduate student Ally Muraskin and junior Makenzie Stiles prior to game one for senior day.
- Game one featured seven extra base hits, including two home runs and a triple from the Panthers. Including game two, Pitt has totaled 13 extra base hits in its last five games.
- For the series, senior Yvonne Whaley went 5-for-9 with a homer, three RBI and three runs for the series.
