
Pitt Falls, 4-2, in First Game of Series at Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Pitt softball team dropped a 4-2 decision to Virginia in the first game of a three-game series at Palmer Park Friday evening.
NEWS & NOTES
Both pitchers found grooves early as the game combined for three hits (two Pitt, one Virginia) and no runs through three innings. Virginia (24-21, 10-9 ACC) scored the game's first run in the bottom of the fourth with a groundout to second base. The Cavaliers had a runner on third with one out, but Drogemuller registered a groundout and a strikeout to end the frame.
After a scoreless fifth inning, Pitt (14-22, 2-15 ACC) had its biggest inning of the contest in the sixth as it totaled two runs on three hits to lead 2-1. Freshman Amanda "Tuta" Ramirez led the inning off by reaching via an error. Both freshman Kylie Griggs and Whaley reached first via bunts, loading the bases for the Panthers with no outs. Sophomore Cami Compson hit a sharp single up the middle to score two as she recorded her team-leading 21st and 22nd RBI of the season.
The Cavaliers answered in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs on two hits while Pitt registered two errors in the frame. A single up the middle tied the game up at 2-2 while another single later in the inning sent two home as Virginia led 4-2 after six. Pitt could not answer in the top of the seventh and fell.
Game two of the series is tomorrow with a 1 p.m. first pitch on the ACCNX.

- Redshirt freshman Dani Drogemuller struck out seven batters in 5.1 innings of work. The 7+ strikeout performance was her 14th of the season. She has 145 strikeouts for the season, four behind Cory Berliner for fifth all-time for a single season.
- Senior Yvonne Whaley extended her hitting streak to six games. She has recorded a hit in 11 of her last 12 games.
