LEESBURG, Fla. – The Pitt softball team endured a pitcher's duel in the first game of the season versus Michigan State, falling 1-0 before bouncing back and scoring 10 runs and shutting out Akron, 10-0.
NEWS & NOTES
-Sophomore EC Taylor finished the day with three hits, one RBI and two stolen bases. She led off both games with a single.
-Junior Bailey Drapola drove in the first runs for the Panthers in 2022, hitting a 3 RBI triple down the left field line against Akron.
-Panther pitching performed well in the circle, combining for seven strikeouts and one earned run in 12 innings pitched.
Game 1 vs. Michigan State
Despite hitting the first batter of the contest, redshirt freshman Dani Drogemuller responded with two strikeouts and a scoreless top of the first. Michigan State's Ashley Miller gave up a first at-bat single to Taylor but also responded, retiring the next three batters to end the first with no score.
Both pitchers found a groove with Drogemuller catching a line drive and throwing to first for a double-play in the third. Michigan State scored the first and only run of the game in the top of the fourth as Ken Kates singled up the middle for an RBI.
Pitt was unable to register a hit after senior Sarah Seamans' single in the second and fell 1-0. Graduate student pitcher Ally Muraskin came on to relieve Drogemuller in the fifth and pitched well in her Panther debut, going 2.2 innings with one walk. Drogemuller threw 4.1 innings with 4 hits, 1 earned run, two walks and three strikeouts.
Game 2 vs. Akron
Pitt's offense came alive in the second game, with eight runs scored in the top of the second to distance themselves from the Zips. Drapola's 3-RBI triple brought in freshman Ana Hernandez, junior Kayla Lane and Seamans. Taylor brought in Drapola with an RBI single in the next at bat. Freshman Haylie Brunson recorded the first hit and RBI of her collegiate career with an RBI single, scoring sophomore Cami Compson. Seamans hit the second triple of the inning for the Panthers, bringing in Brunson and Compson and Seamans later scored on a wild pitch for the eighth run of the inning.
Prior to the second inning barrage, Pitt's defense came in clutch as it escaped a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the first. With no outs, senior Abby Edwards recorded a strikeout and the Panther defense turning a 5-2-3 double play, the third of the day for the defense. Solid defense along with pitching from Edwards and freshman Kendall Brown limited any threats on the base paths from Akron hitters.
The Panthers next face Eastern Kentucky tomorrow at 11 a.m. in day two of the Northern Lights Invitational.
