Panthers Set for Dual Meet at Texas Woman’s University

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh gymnastics team (1-1, 1-0 EAGL) will compete in its first road test of the 2022 season by traveling to Denton, Texas to face Texas Woman's University (1-3, 0-0 MIC) Saturday at 6 p.m. CT at Kitty Magee Arena.

LAST TIME OUT
- In the Panthers' second annual #UntilWeUnite meet, Pitt opened the season with a win over EAGL opponent, LIU, 192.900-192.650, and a loss to Maryland, 192.925-192.900.
- Freshman Sidney Washington made her career debut, earning the win on floor exercise with a 9.850 and third overall in the all-around with a 38.450. Senior Katie Chamberlain tied her career-best score of 9.850 on beam to secure the event title.
- Freshman Hallie Copperwheat also competed in the all-around in her collegiate debut, securing second overall with a 38.900.
- Graduate student Kailey Gillings returned to competition following a season-ending injury in 2021, scoring a 9.775 on bars.
COPPERWHEAT NAMED EAGL CO-ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
- In her collegiate debut, the Leighton Buzzard, England native had the highest all-around score for the Panthers with a 38.900, earning her second place overall. She scored above a 9.700 or higher in all but one event and was one of only two Panthers to score a 9.825 or higher on beam.
- Copperwheat shared the honor with freshman Clara Hong from Towson.
- She is the first Panther to earn the distinction since Ciara Ward during the 2020 season.
SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
- The Pioneers are coming off a loss at Iowa, 196.125-189.300. TWU recorded their highest vault score in program history, 48.475. The team currently has a 1-3 overall record.
- TWU returns all but two seniors for the 2022 season - including two USAG national title winners and five USAG Championship Final qualifiers. Senior Isabel Goyco was the sole pioneer at NCAA Regionals, tying for 23rd on floor.
- Saturday will be the 6th meeting between Texas Woman's and Pitt, with the Panthers leading the series, 3-2. The teams met last at TWU's Kitty Magee Arena in 2018 with Pitt winning by a score of 196.100-195.200.
