Two Panthers Earn Titles in Pitt Gymnastics Season Opener

PITTSBURGH—Two Panthers earned event titles for the University of Pittsburgh gymnastics team (1-1, 1-0 EAGL) in their season opener Sunday afternoon at the Fitzgerald Field House against LIU and Maryland.
Freshman Sidney Washington made her career debut, earning the win on floor exercise with a 9.850 and third overall in the all-around with a 38.450. Senior Katie Chamberlain tied her career-best score of 9.850 on beam to secure the event title.
Freshman Hallie Copperwheat also competed in the all-around in her collegiate debut, securing second overall with a 38.900.
Graduate student Kailey Gillings returned to competition following a season-ending injury in 2021.
The Terrapins earned the team victory by a score of 192.925-192.900. The Panthers maintained their undefeated status against LIU with a win of 192.900-192.650.
VAULT
Junior Ciara Ward and Washington tied for third place overall with a 9.800 on vault, leading the Panthers. Copperwheat posted a 9.700, followed by sophomore Nay'yarrah Winder with a 9.600. Senior Olivia Miller recorded a 9.575, followed by freshman Jordyn Ewing with a 9.550 in her collegiate debut to round out scoring.
BARS
Junior Erin Hutchison made her collegiate debut on bars and led the Panthers with a 9.825, tying for second overall in the event. Gillings, who made her triumphant return posted a 9.775, along with Chamberlain. Copperwheat contributed a 9.750 in the event.
BEAM
Chamberlain tied her career-high score of 9.850 to open the event for the Panthers. Copperwheat and Washington continued their pursuit in the all-around, earning a 9.825 and 9.800 respectively.
FLOOR
In her first time competing in the event, Washington earned the highest score of the day with a 9.850. Miller secured second place overall with a 9.825, while Copperwheat earned a 9.625.
UP NEXT
The Panthers will travel to Denton, Texas for their first road test of the season against Texas Woman's, Saturday, Jan. 22 at 6 p.m.
