Pitt Gymnastics to Open Season with Second Annual Unite We Unite Meet

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh gymnastics team (0-0, 0-0 EAGL) will open its 2022 season hosting LIU and Maryland at 2 p.m. ET at the Fitzgerald Field House. Sunday's meet will be the second annual #UntilWeUnite themed meet.

UNITIL WE UNITE MEET
- Sunday's meet against Maryland and LIU will be our second annual #UntilWeUnite meet, which spotlights Pitt Athletics' mission to promote an environment of inclusion for student-athletes, coaches and staff through education, dialogue and through the celebration of our differences.
- In support of Pitt's Until We Unite initiative, the Panthers will wear Black Lives Matter leotards during the meet, as well as BLM shirts during warm-ups.
- The Pitt gymnastics program will be partnering with 1Hood, a local organization that strives to build liberated communities through art, education, and social justice. 1Hood will be spotlighted on our social media and during the meet. RETURNING FOR THE PANTHERS
- Pitt returns 11 Panthers who competed in 2021, including four who earned All-EAGL honors last season and two NCAA Regional qualifiers.
- Senior Katie Chamberlain qualified for NCAA regionals on bars, but had to scratch from competition due to injury. Chamberlain also notched first-team accolades on bars and second-team honors on beam.
- Junior Lauren Beckwith completed her 2021 season on a high note, scoring a career-best 9.900 on beam at NCAA regionals. Beckwith also earned first-team honors on beam and the all-around.
- Senior Olivia Miller earned first-team honors in the all-around and second-team for floor exercise, while junior Emily Liszewski earned a second-team recognition for vault.
- Graduate student, Kailey Gillings, who missed the 2021 season due to injury after transferring from Arkansas, will be competing as a fifth-year gymnast.
NEW PANTHERS
- Pitt welcomes ten new faces to the 2022 roster, consisting of nine freshmen and junior transfer Erin Hutchison.
- Freshmen Hallie Copperwheat, a six-time member of the Great Britain Gymnastics Team, Jordyn Ewing, a former Canadian elite gymnast, and Sidney Washington, a two-time level 10 national qualifier, are expected to be big contributors for the Panthers from the start.
- Hutchison spent her first two collegiate seasons at Oklahoma. While Hutchison has yet to compete in college, she is anticipated to make a huge impact on multiple events for Pitt.
SCOUTING MARYLAND
- Maryland finished the 2021 season with a NQS of 195.075, ranking 30th in the RoadtoNationals standings. The Terrapins concluded with a 11-9, 3-5 record and ranked sixth in the Big Ten.
- Senior Audrey Barber returns as the Terrapins's leading all-arounder, ending the 2021 season ranked 22nd in the nation. Barber enters the 2022 season leading Maryland on bars and floor.
- Sunday will be the 59th meeting between the Panthers and the Terrapins. Maryland claimed the last meeting on March 17, 2019, 196.450-193.850 at a five-team meet hosted at Towson. Pitt owns an 11-6 lead in the all-time series when competing in Pittsburgh.
SCOUTING LIU
- The Sharks kicked off their 2022 season in a quad meet with Yale, Brown, and West Chester. LIU placed second overall, topping both Yale and Brown. Sophomore Jah'Liyah Bedminster led the Sharks, earning individual titles on vault and floor exercise.
- In its inaugural 2021 season, the Sharks went 0-12 in the regular season, finishing in seventh place overall in the EAGL. Four gymnasts earned All-EAGL recognition.
- Pitt owns a 3-0 lead in the all-time series against LIU, with a 1-0 record when competing in Pittsburgh. The teams last met March 20, 2021 at the EAGL Championship, where the Panthers earned the victory by a score of 194.350-192.725.
UP NEXT
- The Panthers will travel to Denton, Texas for their first road test of the season against Texas Woman's, Saturday, Jan. 22 at 6 p.m.
