PITTSBURGH – The Pitt softball team is set to host Seton Hill Sunday afternoon for a double-header beginning at 12 p.m. at Vartabedian Field.
Admission is free for both games Sunday. Game two will begin approximately 30 minutes after game one.
The Panthers return 12 players from last year's team. Highlighting the returnees is senior Sarah Seamans, who was named All-ACC Second Team a year ago. Seamans' bat was among the best in the Atlantic Coast Conference, finishing fourth in home runs (13), 12th in slugging percentage (.647), T-10th in total bases (86) and 10th in RBI (35). She also registered 282 putouts at first base, good for sixth in the league.
Also returning is sophomore Cami Compson and junior EC Taylor, both of which received All-ACC Third Team recognition last year. Compson totaled 11 home runs, tied for seventh in the ACC and second among freshmen hitters. She also led the team in batting average (.325) and OPS (1.033) and was second in RBI (29). Compson was also named to the All-ACC Freshman Team and was a NFCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region Second Team recipient.
Taylor quickly made her name known in the conference, figuratively and literally, as she finished fourth in the ACC with 27 stolen bases. Taylor led the Panthers in hits (45) and broke a Pitt single-season record for stolen bases in a game with four against Virginia last February.
Nine new faces join the team for the 2021-22 season, including seven freshman. Senior transfer Yvonne Whaley comes from Texas Tech, where she led the Red Raiders in batting average (.342), hits (50), doubles (9) and had a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. Junior transfer Kat Rodriguez joins from Quinnipiac, where she led the team in almost every offensive category, including batting average (.352), OPS (.880), hits (43), runs (24) and slugging percentage (.484).
Five states are represented among the seven incoming freshman, including Pennsylvanians Kendall Brown (Phoenixville) and Haylie Brunson (Mount Pleasant). Both Ana Hernandez and Amanda "Tuta" Ramirez hail from Miami, Fla., while Kylie Griggs (Perrysburg) and Maya Johnson (Columbia Station) come from Ohio. Rachael Fuerst is a native of West Seneca, N.Y., attending West Seneca East Senior.
Pitt is home next Saturday, Oct. 2 with games against Fairmont State and Robert Morris. The first game against Fairmont State begins at 10 a.m. followed by a neutral site contest between Fairmont State and Robert Morris at 12:30 p.m. The Panthers and Robert Morris will conclude competition with a scheduled third game at 3 p.m.
