No. 17 Pitt Hosts No. 15 Miami for Weekend Series

PITTSBURGH – No. 17 Pitt baseball (14-10, 9-9) faces No. 15 Miami (17-8, 10-7) in an ACC home weekend series. The Panthers square off against the Hurricanes Friday and Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.

- Currently Pitt is ranked as high as 17th by Baseball America and also 24th by DIBaseball.com, 28th by the NCBWA and receiving votes in the other two major polls, USA Today Coaches and Collegiate Baseball.
- Pitt recorded its highest-ever ranking in program history two weeks ago, garnering the No. 14 slot in the Baseball America Poll.
- The Panthers were ranked in the top-20 all five major polls: DIBaseball.com (No. 15), Collegiate Baseball (No. 18), USA TODAY Sports Coaches' Poll (No. 18) and National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association (No. 20).
- Three weeks ago Pitt debuted in the top-25 nationally for the first time since May 13, 2013 with selections in the polls by DIBaseball.com (No. 18) and Baseball America (No. 19). The rankings are the first since joining the ACC for the 2014 season.
- The last team to be ranked at all, the 2013 Panthers' squad was ranked as high as 16th by Collegiate Baseball on May 13, 2013.
- With the series win over the Cavaliers, the Panthers wrapped up a 16-game streak away from home with four ACC weekend series to start the season with an 11-5 overall record and 8-4 league mark that tied North Carolina and Georgia Tech atop the Coastal Division. Pitt recorded its best start 12 games into league action.
TOP RPI MATCHUP
- The series features a pair of top-30 RPI ranked teams, as Miami (15th) and Pitt (26th) are the highest-ranked teams in the conference by the RPI.
- Pitt has the 21st-toughest strength of schedule so far this season and own three wins against quadrant one teams (a series sweep over the No. 21 team, Florida State).
- All but two games have come against quadrant one and two teams.
- The ACC also ranks second in the conference RPI rankings as all 14 teams are in the top-100 with eight in the top-50.
- The NCAA released its first RPI rankings of the season Feb. 25, and the Panthers were slotted second (.6487) behind just Arkansas.
LAST TIME OUT-BACKYARD BRAWL
- Pitt wrapped up four-straight games at home with a 5-1 defeat of West Virginia Tuesday.
- Starting pitcher Chris Gomez went a career-high seven innings with just one run and no walks allowed to pick up the win.
- The Panthers scored four runs in the third inning to take a lead for good.
- Kyle Hess homered to start the frame, followed by a two-run double from Bryce Hulett and an RBI-infield single from Jackson Phinney.
- David Yanni added to the lead with a solo homer to right field in the seventh inning.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT-NO. 15 MIAMI
- The Hurricanes are ranked as high as 15th in the NCBWA and USA Today Coaches' Poll.
- Miami is on a six-game winning streak and eight of its last nine that included two series wins at Virginia and against Duke at home last weekend.
- Freshman Carson Palmquist leads the nation in saves.
- The reigning ACC Player of the Week, redshirt-sophomore outfielder Christian Del Castillo leads the team in batting average (.340) and on-base percentage (.411) with 23 RBIs and six extra-base hits.
- Freshman infielder Yohandy Morales is the top power hitter on the team with a team-best seven homers and .600 slugging percentage.
ALL-TIME SERIES
- Miami leads the all-time series 20-4 with the two programs playing for the first time on March 7, 2001 as Big East members.
- The Hurricanes took all three games in the only ACC games for the Panthers in 2020.
