Pitt Heads to Atlanta for Matchup with No. 7 Georgia Tech

PITTSBURGH – Pitt baseball (7-3, 4-2) faces No. 7 Georgia Tech (8-3, 5-1) beginning Friday at 7 p.m. followed by Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT-AT RV DUKE
- Pitt took one of three games at then-RV Duke last weekend, bouncing back after dropping the first two games to come back and win 5-4 at Duke.
- With the series sweep at then-No. 9 Florida State last weekend and the win Sunday over Duke, a top-25 preseason ranked team and receiving votes in this week's polls, the Panthers are off to the best start (4-2) in ACC play through two weekends since joining the league for the 2014 season.
- Nico Popa drove home the three unanswered runs in the rally with a sac fly in the sixth inning and then hitting the go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth.
- Dylan Lester and Jordan McCrum teamed up for stellar bullpen appearances.
- Lester entered in the fourth inning with two outs and threw three scoreless innings of relief with four strikeouts and just two hits and one walk allowed. McCrum was even more lights out while registering the final seven outs, giving up only one hit and no walks along with three strikeouts.
MCCRUM'S RETURN TO ACTION
- While most players went almost a year without playing a college baseball game due to the pandemic, Jordan McCrum went 721 days between playing games.
- While at Monmouth, McCrum tore his UCL on March 3, 2019 against Florida Atlantic that required Tommy John Surgery the following month.
- The senior made his Panthers' debut on Sunday, Feb. 21 in the 10-1 win over Indiana State and pitched a scoreless inning and struck out one.
- McCrum hasn't allowed a run yet in five scoreless relief appearances and has averaged 1.56 strikeouts per inning.
- Against Florida State, he picked up saves in the first and three games of the series.
- At Duke, he just up just one hit and no walk in 2.1 innings to pick up his first win as a Panther.
THE DUFFMAN
- Sky Duff has been an effective leadoff batter this season for the Panthers.
- Known for his ability to draw walks, Duff has averaged almost a walk every game with nine total.
- The sophomore has shown an improvement with his power, racking up five doubles so far that ranks tied for second in the ACC and 31st in the nation with teammate Kyle Hess.
- The five doubles this year are more than he got last year (four) and over half the extra-base hits (eight doubles and a homer) he had as a freshman.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT-NO. 7 GEORGIA TECH
- Georgia Tech has won all three weekend series this season, including a sweep of then-No. 8 NC State on the road and two wins over then-No. 1 Louisville last weekend at home.
- Scoring 63 runs in six ACC games, the Yellow Jacket possess one of the top offenses in Division I, ranking in the nation 15th in slugging percentage (.527), 19th in homers (16), 22nd in batting average (.315), 24th in walks (63), 25th in scoring (8.7 runs per game) and 28th in on-base percentage (.417).
- Ranked as high as No. 7 by DIBaseball.com and Baseball America's Polls, Georgia Tech was picked to finish third in the Coastal Division in the league's preseason coaches' poll.
- Freshman catcher Kevin Parada leads the conference in batting average (.486) along with a .811 slugging percentage while freshman infielder Drew Compton is second in slugging percentage (.947) and fourth in on-base percentage (.542).

- The series is all tied up 9-9.
- All 18 matchups have come as ACC opponents, and the home team has won each series.
