Pitt Opens Series with 11-9 Comeback Win at No. 7 Georgia Tech

Ron Washington, Jr. led off the ninth with an infield single, and David Yanni followed with a homer to right center, his fourth of the year. The bases became loaded with singles from Bryce Hulett, Riley Wash and pinch-hitter Matt Tarabek. Sky Duff drew a one-out RBI-walk to cut the deficit to one run. With two outs, Kyle Hess delivered with a go-ahead two-run single that knocked in pinch-runner Dom Popa and Tarabek. The Panthers added two more on a fielding error by the centerfielder on a ball that Ron Washington, Jr. drove to the wall.

Georgia Tech got a run in the bottom of the inning on a two-out RBI-single, but Jordan McCrum produced the last out with a line out to right fielder Nico Popa. McCrum earned his third save of the season along with two strikeouts.

After Georgia Tech took advantage on an error in the sixth inning that allowed its leadoff hitter to reach base to score three unearned runs, Pitt got on the board in the seventh inning with three runs.
Wash led off with a single to left center, and Brock Franks followed with a double down the right field line. After Duff reached base on a throwing error by the third baseman, another error by the left fielder with two outs allowed all three runners to score.
The Yellow Jackets pushed it back to a four-run game on an RBI-double and sac fly in the bottom of the inning.
The Panthers responded once again in the next inning. The bases were loaded in the next inning when Wash, Franks and Duff all singled. Wash scored on an RBI-groundout by Popa.
The Yellow Jackets took the lead in the second inning on a two-out RBI-single up the middle and got their second run on another two-out RBI hit in the fourth.
The second game of the series is Saturday at 6 p.m. for another ACC Network broadcast.
NOTES
- Mitch Myers started and went 5.2 innings with two earned runs, 10 hits, one walk and seven strikeouts.
- Chris Pouliot (2-0) earned the win, recording the three outs in the eighth inning with two hits and one run allowed.
- Pitt extended its best start ever in ACC play with its fifth win in seven games, all on the road.
- Trailing by five runs, the comeback was the largest over two other ACC wins where the Panthers recovered from a deficit (3-7 to a 9-7 win at then-No. 9 Florida State on Feb. 28 and 2-4 to 5-2 victory at RV Duke last Sunday).
- Yanni has four homers in his last two games against Georgia Tech as he hit three in the 2019 season-finale on May 18, 2019 in a 9-3 win over the then-No. 7 Yellow Jackets.
- The homer was the 20th in Yanni's career at Pitt.
- 10 Panthers combined for 19 hits, the most since Pitt had 20 on opening day last year (Feb. 14, 2020) in a 14-8 win over Saint Joseph's that went 14 innings.
- Wash had a game-high four hits along with two runs.
- Yanni collected a game-high two walks in addition to two hits.
- Popa and Hess both went 2-6.
- Pitt's pitching staff combined for nine strikeouts to just two walks.
