Pessima Breaks School Record As Panthers Close Out Penn State National

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – The Pitt track and field teams continued to show growth this weekend as they competed in the Penn State National as they posted four victories, three individual and one relay, along with multiple top-10 all-time marks and personal records.
The Panthers hurdlers continued to make huge strides for the Panthers on Friday night as Eddita Pessima and Shyheim Wright both collected victories in the 60m hurdles. Pessima had a huge night as she set the school record in the 60m hurdles as she crossed the finish line in 8.23 seconds, .14 seconds ahead of the second place finisher. Her time broke a six-year old school record that was held by Taranisha Taylor and Brianna Broyles (8.32 seconds). Her new personal record run is the second fastest in the ACC and 18th fastest in the NCAA so far this season.
Wright continued his great start to his senior campaign as he notched the victory in the 60m hurdles for the third straight weekend. Wright crossed the finish line with a new personal best time of 7.67 seconds, marking the second fastest time in program history. His mark of 7.67 seconds also sits as the third best time in the ACC and fifth best in the NCAA this season.
In the long jump, senior Taylor Middleton put together her best performance of the season as she notched her first win in the event with a leap covering 19'10.75" (6.06m). Middleton's leap marked her best of the season and the fourth best in the ACC so far this season.
In the relays, the men's distance medley relay team of Josh Higgins, Cobe Wiggins, Drew Glick and Nick Wolk had their best showing of the season as they claimed the victory in the event by over four seconds, crossing the finish line in a season-best 9:51.86. The time also marked the fourth fastest time in program history and the fourth fastest in the ACC this season.
In the distance events, Pitt had some success on Saturday afternoon as senior Nick Wolk ran a strong race in the 3000m run invitational as he claimed second place overall with a time of 8:12.62. In the mile run invitational, Josh Higgins was able to post a personal record time of 4:09.48 while posting a ninth place finish in the talented field of runners. Freshman Jack Wisner was able to claim second place with a personal best time of 4:14.10 in the mile run as well.
Pitt had a pair of strong showings in the 800m run as Ally Brunton posted a new personal record time of 2:13.01 to claim third place. On the men's side, Drew Glick took home fourth place with a season-best time of 1:50.88 while Jack Balick notched a ninth place finish, crossing the finish line with a personal best time of 1:54.77.
Junior Nikki Scherer continued her strong start to the season this weekend as she earned a third place finish in the 200m dash invitational with a personal record time of 24.09 seconds, the seventh fastest time in program history in the event. Fellow Panther Jaylyn Aminu also notched fifth place in the 200m dash invitational with a personal best time of 24.41 seconds while Genaya Johnson notched third place in the 200m dash with a time of 24.91 seconds. Scherer then went on to claim a fourth place finish in the 400m dash invitational, crossing the finish line in 54.97 seconds.
In the heptathlon, junior Cobe Wiggins had a strong showing for his first of the indoor season as he claimed the win with 3,687 points. Wiggins won five of the six events and posted season-best marks in four of the six events. He posted a new PR in the pole vault as he cleared 10'6.00" (3.20m) while also posting season-best marks in the 60m dash (7.25 seconds), high jump (5'7.75") and shot put (37'4.00").
The Panthers will return to the track next weekend as they head to South Bend, IN to compete in the Meyo Invitational on Friday, Feb. 7 and Saturday, Feb. 8. The Meyo Invitational is hosted by Notre Dame.
