SANFORD, Fla. – Kyle Hess finished a single shy of the cycle, and Mitch Meyers (2-1) threw six scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts and just one hit and no walks as Pitt baseball (9-1) shut out Lehigh (2-7) 10-0 for its seventh-straight win Saturday afternoon in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at Historic Sanford Memorial Stadium. Both teams agreed to end the game after the seventh inning.
The Panthers have tied for the second-best start to the season through 10 games (1959, 1963, 1967 and 1993). The 2002 squad started 9-0-1.
The Panthers took the lead in the bottom of the second inning when Hess led off with a homer to right field, his second of the season.
Hess knocked in two more runs the following inning. After David Yanni singled to right field and Ron Washington Jr. drew a walk with one out, Hess brought them both home with a double to left field. After Samuel Frontino walked, Bryce Hulett then hit another two-run double down the right field line.
The Panthers added three more runs in the next inning. Jordan Anderson singled through the right side with one out and stole second base. After Nico Popa walked, Yanni loaded the bases with a single to right field. With two outs, Hess tripled down the right field line to bring home all three baserunners.
Pitt got another run in its next trip when Hulett and Nick Vera doubled in the first two at-bats of the frame.
The last run came in the seventh inning. Pinch-hitter Grant Santangelo drew a leadoff walk, and Vera doubled again to left field. A wild pitch allowed Santangelo to easily score at home plate.
NEWS AND NOTES
HEAD COACH MIKE BELL'S TAKE
"Kyle Hess started it with a home, used a quality at-bat double to left field and then had a bases-loaded triple to right field," said Pitt head coach Mike Bell. "He's been working really hard with Coach Ty Megahee and really did a great job of putting himself in good counts to hit, which he did damage in those counts. Myers continues to fill up the zone, did a great job of pitching with a lead and stayed in attack mode all day."
