Panthers Fall To #5 Louisville On Senior Day At The Pete

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's basketball team dropped their final home game of the season on Sunday afternoon to #5 Louisville inside the Pete, 79-47. Prior to the game on Sunday, the Panthers honored three student-athletes, Aysia Bugg, Alayna Gribble and former Pitt standout Yacine Diop who is playing her final season for the Cardinals.
After Gabbie Green opened the scoring with a deep triple on the Panthers second possession of the game, the Louisville Cardinals went on an 8-0 run to force Pitt to call their first timeout of the game. The Panthers settled in after the timeout as Rita Igbokwe and Emy Hayford finished off layups to cut the Pitt deficit to one, 8-7. Louisville knocked down a triple to take the 13-9 lead with under 10 seconds to play in the first quarter but Jahsyni Knight hit the half-court shot at the buzzer as the Panthers went to the second quarter trailing by one, 13-12.
The Cardinals were able to open the game up a bit in the second quarter as they scored the first 16 points of the quarter before Cara Judkins finished off a layup to make the score 29-14 in favor of the visitors. Dayshanette Harris then took over for the Panthers as she netted eight straight points including a pair of triples to cut the Louisville lead to nine, 31-22. The Cardinals were then able to close the first half on an 8-2 run to take the 39-24 lead into the locker room.
The third quarter was a big problem for the Panthers once again on Sunday as they were outscored 24-5 in the quarter as the Cardinals pushed their lead out to 63-29 through 30 minutes. The Panthers were held to just 2-for-15 shooting in the third while Louisville shot 55.6% in the quarter.
Pitt had a strong fourth quarter once again as they outscored the Cardinals 18-16 across the final 10 minutes of action. Green led the way in the final frame as she netted eight of her team-high 11 points as the Panthers fell in their final home game of the season 79-47.
Green led the way scoring for Pitt on Sunday as she finished with 11 points and two rebounds while connecting on three triples in the loss. Harris netted 10 points, five rebounds and two assists across 33 minutes while Igbokwe chipped in with eight points, six boards and two blocks in the loss. Amber Brown grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and three assists while Judkins grabbed five boards off the bench.
As a team, Louisville shot 48.4% from the floor while they held the Panthers to just 29.3% shooting in the loss. Pitt turned the ball over 22 times and the Cardinals netted 26 points off of those turnovers while they also held the 22-4 edge in fast break scoring.
