
Panthers Second Half Rally Falls Short At Virginia On Thurdsay

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Trailing by as little as three with under five minutes to play, the Pitt women's basketball team wasn't able to overcome a halftime deficit on the road on Thursday night as they fell to Virginia, 66-55. Dayshanette Harris led all scorers with 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists in the loss for the Panthers.
The Panthers couldn't have asked for a better start to the game on Thursday night as they netted nine of the first 11 points of the quarter as Gabbie Green knocked down a triple and Amber Brown closed out the run with a layup through some contact. Over the next three minutes, the Cavaliers went on a 10-0 run to take the 14-10 lead which forced a Pitt timeout. Back-to-back threes by Virginia pushed the lead to six, 22-16, but Harris made a pair of jumpers and Emy Hayford sank two free throws to send the game to the second quarter with the home side leading Pitt, 22-20.
Pitt used the deep ball to cut the lead to just one, 27-26, three minutes into the second quarter as Harris and Green knocked down back-to-back triples for the Panthers. The Pitt offense struggled down the stretch of the second quarter as they turned the ball over nine times in the quarter and the Cavaliers pushed the lead to eight at half, 35-27.
The Pitt offense got out to a slow start in the third quarter as Rita Igbokwe made a pair of layups but the Cavaliers outscored the Panthers 8-4 to push the lead to 12, 43-31 midway through the quarter. The Panthers came alive from behind the arc after the media timeout as Harris hit back-to-back triples and Hayford got free for a triple of her own to cut the Virginia lead to six, 46-40. The Cavaliers answered with four straight but Green hit a runner at the buzzer in the third as the Panthers headed to the fourth trailing 50-44.
The Cavaliers scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to push their lead out to 12, 56-44, but the Panthers didn't back down. Pitt responded quickly with three straight triples from Ismini Prapa, Hayford and Green to cut the Cavaliers lead to five, 58-53, with under five minutes to play. The whistle wasn't friendly to Pitt down the stretch as the Cavaliers outscored the Panthers 8-2 in the final four minutes to secure the 66-55 win.
Harris had another strong game for the Panthers on Thursday as she netted a game-high 19 points, seven rebounds and tied a career-high with six assists while connecting on three triples in the loss. Green netted 11 points and four rebounds while Igbokwe finished off her game with nine points, three boards and two blocks.
As a team, the Panthers shot 34% from the floor and connected on nine triples in the loss. The Cavaliers held the 42-35 edge in rebounding while posting 30 points in the paint compared to just 12 by Pitt.
