CHESTNUT HILL, MA – Despite a career night from freshman point guard Dayshanette Harris, the Pitt women's basketball team fell on the road on Thursday night to the Boston College Eagles, 70-59. Harris is the first Pitt freshman since Brianna Kiesel in 2011-12 to record at least three 20+ point scoring games in a single season.
Harris carried the load for the Panthers offense all night long as she finished with a career-high 27 points, six rebounds, two steals and an assists while going 9-for-26 from the floor and connecting on a career-best three triples in the loss. Harris has now scored in double figures in three straight games and seven of her last eight games overall for the Panthers.
After the two teams traded buckets early on, the Panthers were able to gain the 8-4 lead at the first media timeout as Gabbie Green earned a steal and layup and Cara Judkins finished off a layup. Freshman Dayshanette Harris finished off the first quarter with four straight points for the Panthers as they took the 12-11 lead into the second quarter. The Pitt defense held the Eagles to just one field goal over the final three minutes of the first.
The Eagles got out to a quick start in the second quarter as they pushed their lead out to 24-15 midway through the second. Out of the media timeout, the Panthers got back-to-back buckets by Green and Rita Igbokwe to cut their deficit down to five, 24-19, late in the quarter. Jahsyni Knight closed out the scoring for Pitt in the final minute as she finished off a layup to send the teams to the locker room with Boston College leading 27-21.
Boston College started the third quarter with five straight points before Harris put the team on her back for a couple minutes with seven straight points. After a Harris jumper brought Pitt within 38-28, the Eagles netted back-to-back layups to take a 14-point lead and forced Pitt to call a timeout. Harris knocked down her second triple of the game out of the timeout to give her 20 points on the night but the Eagles scored the final six points of the quarter to take the 50-33 lead into the fourth.
The Pitt offense finally got on track in the fourth quarter as they were able to outscore the Eagles 26-20 across the final 10 minutes of action but couldn't overcome the 17-point deficit they faced heading into the final frame. Harris and Green led the Panthers with seven points each in the final quarter while Amber Brown finished with six points across the final 10 minutes of work.
Green finished off her night with 11 points, five rebounds and two steals while Igbokwe closed out her game with four points and a team-high eight rebounds. Brown netted seven points and four boards while Knight came off the bench and scored four points and three boards.
As a team, Pitt was outrebounded 43-31 for the game and were outscored 32-20 inside the paint. Pitt forced 16 Boston College turnovers and turned those into 20 points in the loss.
