
Panthers Earn Individual Wins on Four Events in Dual Meet

Burton, Ward, Herbine Claim Event Titles
PITTSBURGH – The Panthers recorded individual wins on four events Sunday afternoon, however, Pitt gymnastics (0-2, 0-1 EAGL) fell short in a dual meet with Ball State (2-1, 0-0 MAC) at Fitzgerald Field House.
The Cardinals edged the Panthers by a score of 193.750-193.225.
For the second consecutive meet, senior Michaela Burton picked up the crown on uneven bars (9.825) and floor exercise (9.875). Her floor score tied a career high, which she last earned in 2018.
Freshman Ciara Ward earned the first individual win of her career with a 9.775 on vault, and senior Deven Herbine was the meet's top performer on balance beam at 9.800.
VAULT
Three Panthers earned or tied career-high scores on vault to open the meet. Ward had the meet's top score (9.775). Classmate Emily Liszewski had a season-best 9.650, and junior Jordan Ceccarini tied her top score as a Panther at 9.700. Herbine and classmate Alecia Petrikis each posted 9.725 to tie for fifth place. As a team, Pitt opened the meet with a season-best vault score of 48.575.
BARS
Pitt claimed the top three bars scores of the meet, with Burton winning the event at 9.825. Freshman Reaia Floyd was runner-up with a career-best 9.800, and Ward followed with a career-best 9.750. For the second consecutive event, Pitt earned a season-best score, posting 48.725 as a team. Through two events, Pitt totaled 97.300.
BEAM
Despite Herbine's event-winning score of 9.800, the Panthers struggled on beam, totaling 47.025 to post a three-event score of 144.325.
FLOOR
To close out the meet, all six Panthers contributed scores of 9.700 or better to finish with a floor score of 48.900, marking a season-best. Five of the six Panthers had career- or season-best scores, led by Burton at 9.875. Ceccarini (9.775), Petrikis (9.775) and junior Sophie Bochenek (9.725) each had their best scores of the season. Herbine had a career-best score of 9.750.

For its first road meet of the season, Pitt will get a preview of the 2020 EAGL Championship site, visiting North Carolina Saturday, Jan. 25, at 4 p.m. in Chapel Hill, N.C.
