West Nets Golden Goal In Second OT To Lift Pitt Over Bucknell On Sunday

PITTSBURGH – Freshman forward Amanda West played hero for the Panthers once again on Sunday afternoon as her golden goal in the 101st minute lifted the Pitt women's soccer team to a 1-0 double overtime victory over Bucknell on the road. With the win, Pitt improves to 2-0-0 for the third straight season.

- Cheyenne Hudson was able to notch the first shot of the game in the second minute as she intercepted a Bucknell pass and ripped a low shot towards the lower left corner of the net but the keeper made a great diving stop to keep the game scoreless.
- Pitt had a pair of dangerous chances in the 16th minute as Amanda West bolted into the box and hit a low hard shot towards the right corner of the goal but it was stopped by the Bucknell keeper. Anna Rico gathered the rebound off the save but her shot attempt was saved by the sprawled out keeper to keep the game knotted, 0-0.
- In the 31st minute, freshman Ava Hanna got free just inside the box and took a hard shot towards the left corner that was stopped by the Bucknell keeper.
- Pitt had their best chance of the opening half in the 36th minute as Margret Arnadottir found some space a took a shot that rang off the crossbar and was cleared by the Bucknell defense out of harm's way to keep the game scoreless in the first half.
- The Bison had a great chance to break the scoreless game in the 52nd minute as Jenna Marek turned and fired a low shot that just missed the lower right corner.
- In the 54th minute, Anna Rico had a golden scoring chance after settling the corner kick from Krystyna Rytel as she fired a shot from in close that was stopped by the Bucknell keeper.
- Bucknell had a dangerous chance in the 67th minute as Lilly Courts nearly missed over the top of the goal after a free kick was served into the 18-yard box.
- Amaia Pena made a nice stop in the 75th minute as Marek broke in free and took a shot towards the right corner of the net but Pena was up to the test and kept the game scoreless.
- Pitt had back-to-back corners in the 78th minute and on the latter, Celia Lopez found the loose ball and ripped a shot over the top of the goal.
- Pitt had a pair of great chances in the 86th minute as Anna Bout dribbled in and took a low shot that was kicked away by the Bucknell keeper. The rebound was controlled by Rachel Rasins and she had the open net but her shot attempt was tipped just wide of the goal.
- In the 99th minute, Amanda West made a great run down the left side of the field and cut into the box and fed Margret Arnadottir who saw her shot stopped by the diving keeper. On the rebound, Anna Rico beat the keeper but her hard low shot rang off the right post and bounced away to send the game to a second overtime.
- Pitt was able to end the game in the 101st minute of play as Anna Rico sent Amanda West in free on goal and she deked around the goalkeeper and buried the game-winner into the left corner of the Bucknell goal.
- The win gives the Panthers their third straight 2-0-0 start to the season.
- Pitt improves to 5-2-1 in their last eight road opening matches.
- The Panthers tie the all-time series with Bucknell, 2-2-0, including two straight wins in the series.
- The win marked the first double overtime win for Pitt since 8/19/18 against Morehead State.
- The Panthers held the dominant 27-11 edge in shots for the game including a 13-2 edge in shots on goal. Bucknell held the slim 9-8 advantage in corner kicks.
- Freshman Amanda West buried her second straight game-winning goal and her fourth of the season in the win.
- Sophomore Anna Rico notched an assist on West's game-winner, her career-high third assist of the season.
- West and Rico led the Panthers with six shots each while Margret Arnadottir had three and Anna Bout and Athalie Palomo recorded two shots in the win.
- Amaia Pena finished off her first cleansheet of the season with two saves while her counterpart Haylee Donnelly made 12 stops in the overtime loss. Pena now has three career cleansheets for the Panthers.
- Hollie Olding and Cheyenne Hudson each notched their first start of the season for Pitt.
- Head coach Randy Waldrum now has 405 career head coaching victories, ranking 14th in NCAA history and tied for sixth amongst active NCAA Division I women's soccer head coaches.
- Head Coach Randy Waldrum: "I am really proud of the way our team played today. We had one less day of rest than Bucknell, but I think our players controlled the tempo which was important for us. We were better organized defensively and Anna Rico and Amanda West combined for a great game-winning goal. I am proud of the way this team has grown over the past few weeks."
- The Panthers will stay on the road for their next two matches as they will take on Dartmouth on Friday, August 30 at 1:00 pm and UMass on Sunday, September 1 at 1:00 pm.
