Panthers and Hokies to Close out Series on Sunday
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburg softball team dropped its doubleheader to No. 24 Virginia Tech Saturday afternoon at Vartabedian Field.
The Panthers fell in game one by a score of 18-0 before dropping their second contest, 9-1. The Hokies used high-scoring third innings to separate themselves in both contests, scoring nine runs in the frame in game one and collecting seven runs in the inning during game two.
"It wasn't our best showing, especially in that first game," said head coach Jodi Hermanek. "We didn't do a great job of keeping the ball in the yard against some pretty good hitters from Virginia Tech, but we also gave them extra at-bats by making mistakes on routine fly balls that would've helped our pitchers get out of the circle and face a lot less batters.
"We just had to drop it, let it go, and figure out how to attack the next game and support Brittany Knight on the mound. I thought we had a better showing in game two, other than one inning. I thought she did a better job at keeping some hitters off balance. But, that one inning seems to be a big one and we have to do better getting out of those innings, creating better pitches, and not letting things become so big."
The Panthers utilized two pitchers for game one in senior Taylor Rahach and freshman Abby Edwards. The duo combined to allow 18 earned runs while striking out two in five innings of work.
Pitt collected just two hits in the first contest, with senior Alexis Solak and junior Connor McGaffic both adding one apiece.
Redshirt sophomore Brittany Knight started on the rubber in game two, allowing eight earned runs while tying a career-high with eight strikeouts through seven innings of action.
The Panthers recorded six hits in the backend of their doubleheader. Freshman Katlyn Pavlick led the way with an impressive 3-for-3 showing, while Solak, junior Alexee Haynes and sophomore Brie Horrell all added one hit each.
SCORING SUMMARY – GAME ONE
Both teams were scoreless through two innings of play before Virginia Tech's offense exploded in the third frame, scoring nine runs in the inning. The Hokies used an RBI-single, three-run homer and a grand slam to collect their nine runs.
Virginia Tech added four more in the fourth frame, using three RBI-singles and a sac fly to take a 13-0 advantage.
The Hokies continued their hot streak in the fifth inning, scoring five more runs to earn the 18-0 victory.
SCORING SUMMARY – GAME TWO
Virginia Tech got on the board first in game two, using an RBI-single in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead.
The Hokies again found their rhythm at the plate in the third frame, collecting seven runs in the inning. Virginia Tech used two RBI-singles, a two-RBI double and a three-RBI long ball to earn its runs in the third.
The Panthers scored a run of their own in the bottom of the inning, with Haynes using an RBI-single to right field to send home Pavlick from second and put the score at 8-1.
The Hokies added one more run in the seventh inning to take a 9-1 lead and the eventual win.
