PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh track and field team will move outdoors for the first time in 2019 this weekend as they head to the Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Georgia Tech. The meet will begin on Friday and run through Saturday inside the George C. Griffin Track & Field Facility in Atlanta, GA.

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh track and field team will move outdoors for the first time in 2019 this weekend as they head to the Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Georgia Tech. The meet will begin on Friday and run through Saturday inside the George C. Griffin Track & Field Facility in Atlanta, GA.

- The meet will open up on Friday night as the men's and women's hammer throw will begin at 6:00 pm followed by the men's and women's 5000m run which is slated to begin at 9:00 pm.
- Field events will open the competition on Saturday morning as the men's and women's shot put, javelin and pole vault will begin at 11:00 am. The men's and women's triple jump will wrap up the field events on Saturday around 2:30 pm.
- Track events will begin at 12:30 pm on Saturday as the 4x100m relay will kick things off before wrapping up around 4:40 pm with the 4x400m relay.
- The Panthers closed out their 2018 outdoor season with 20 student-athletes competing in the NCAA East Preliminaries after seeing 12 earn All-ACC Outdoor honors.
- Pitt returns 10 All-ACC Outdoor performers from last season including each member of the men's 4x400m relay team that took home second place at the ACC Outdoor Championships. The quartet of junior Dante' Watson, junior Jabari Michael-Khensu, sophomore Ade Jones-Roundtree and sophomore Lonzell Feagin return this season as one of the favorites to win the event.
- Jones-Roundtree and Michael-Khensu also collected All-ACC honors in the 200m dash as they earned fourth and fifth place finishes, respectively.
- The Panthers return a pair of javelin throwers who landed on the All-ACC Second Team last season in Grant Jones and Carolyn Helenski. Jones took home fourth place, his second career All-ACC honor, while Helenski earned a fifth place finish, the first javelin thrower on the women's side to earn the recognition since 2015.
- Junior Taylor Middleton looks primed to build off of her Second Team All-ACC honors in the triple jump from a season ago as she became the first Panther in program history to earn the recognition in the triple jump.
- 2019 Indoor ACC High Jump Champion Greg Lauray looks to build on his first outdoor season that saw him take home Second Team All-ACC honors in the high jump.
- Junior Shyheim Wright will look to improve on his Second Team All-ACC performance from last season in the 110m hurdles as he took home fifth place in 14.27 seconds.
- Senior Kelly Hayes returns for her final season after posting Second Team All-ACC honors in the 3000m steeplechase last season. As a junior, Hayes posted a school record time of 10:18.64 in the 3000m steeplechase.
- The women's team posted a program-best 11th place finish as they scored 25 points while the men's squad also posted an 11th place finish as they collected 41.5 points, their most since 2016.
- Sophomore Greg Lauray made major strides this season during the indoor season and it resulted in a gold medal at the ACC Indoor Championships in Blacksburg.
- Lauray broke his own school record with a huge leap, clearing 2.19m, as he became the Panthers first-ever ACC Indoor Champion in the high jump.
- His leap of 2.19m broke his own school record after breaking a 36-year old school record the previous week. The previous school record was posted by former Olympic Gold Medalist Roger Kingdom in 1983.
- Lauray is just the fourth individual ACC Indoor Champion in program history joining Carvin Nkanata (200m, 2014), Andrew Wells (weight throw, 2016) and Desiree Garland (400m, 2018).
- Making her first appearance at the Indoor Championships, Sydni Townsend earned Second Team All-ACC honors after taking home sixth place in the 400m run. Townsend also posted a PR in the prelims as she finished in 54.29 seconds, the sixth fastest time in program history.
- Junior Shyheim Wright was able to qualify for the finals in the 60m hurdles with a PR of 7.88 seconds, the sixth fastest time in school history in the event. Wright then collected two points in the finals as he took home seventh place.
- Noah Walker scored in the weight throw for the first time in his indoor career as he collected two points with a seventh place finish. His throw of 18.46m was a PR and the third best toss in program history.
- Sophomore Kollin Smith scored for the second straight season at the Indoor Championships in the long jump as he posted an eighth place finish with a season-best leap of 7.33m.
- In the women's mile run, senior Miranda Salvo put together the best run of her career in the prelims as she posted a school record time of 4:41.65 to take home seventh.
- Junior Dante' Watson qualified for the 800m finals after collecting a sixth place finish with a season-best time of 1:50.81 in the 800m run.
- Pitt had a pair of relay teams earn points led by the women's 4x400m relay quartet of Nikki Scherer, Flora Ahiarakwe, Nina Crwaford and Townsend who took fourth place overall and earned the Panthers five points. On the men's side, the team of Watson, Matt Wilson, Crockett Schooler and Kenneth Brosier took home seventh place and collected two points, finishing in a season-best time of 3:14.22.
- Sophomore Cobe Wiggins collected a point in the heptathlon as he took home eight place overall with a personal record 4,771 points. The 4,771 points are the second most in program history in the event. Wiggins collected the victory in the 1000m run as he crossed the line with a new PR of 2:41.86.
- In the pentathlon, sophomore Breanna Phillips posted a sixth place finish as she recorded a personal record 3,680 points. The 3,680 points are also the fifth most in school history in the event.
- The Panthers will return to the track on Friday, Mar. 22 as they head to the Florida State Relays. On Saturday, Mar. 23 the Panthers will also participate in the Carnegie Mellon Invitational.
