Pitt Concludes Sunshine State Classic Series Sunday
KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team dropped the second of a two-game Saturday slate, falling to Marshall 7-2 at Osceola County Stadium.
"I thought tonight was a game we will look back on and say that we beat ourselves, not taking anything away from [Joshua] Shapiro, who had five strong innings for them," said head coach Mike Bell. "We need to tighten up some things overall as a team and get back after it tomorrow."
Marshall used the opening inning to jump out to a quick lead, plating one after a triple and sacrifice fly. Two more would come across in the second inning, as the Panthers quickly found themselves down by three. The Thundering Herd extended the advantage to 4-0 in the sixth.
Pitt (1-2, 0-0 ACC) began to chip away at the lead in the bottom of the sixth as doubles from Cole MacLaren and Ron Washington Jr. moved the score to 4-1 in favor of Marshall.
The Thundering Herd would score a run in each of the final three innings, plating seven in the game. The Panthers got one in the eighth when Nico Popa drew a one-out walking, moving to second on a balk and taking third on a ground out from David Yanni before the second balk of the inning would plate the runner.
Marshall, however, would hold on to the lead as the Panthers dropped the nightcap.
Freshman Billy Corcoran (0-1) got the first start of his career, going 4.0 innings, allowing three runs off five hits and one walk, striking out four. Fellow freshman Brady Devereux threw 2.2 innings of relief, giving up two runs off four hits and one walk, striking out four, while junior transfer David Moore tossed 1.1 innings without giving up a hit, allowing one run off two walks and striking out three. Sophomore closer Chase Smith tossed the final frame, giving up one hit and striking out a pair.
Offensively, Bryce O'Farrell finished the contest with a pair of hits, while Washington Jr. tallied the team's lone RBI.
Pitt will conclude the Sunshine State Classic Series Sunday at 1:30 p.m., taking on Milwaukee.
