Panthers, Colonials Both in Hunt for First EAGL Win of 2019
PITTSBURGH – The Pitt gymnastics team (4-2, 0-1 EAGL) will look to earn its first East Atlantic Gymnastics League win of the season as it hosts George Washington (2-1, 0-1 EAGL) in a dual meet Saturday at 2 p.m. at Fitzgerald Field House.

A WIN WOULD…
- Give the Panthers a 17-16 edge in the all-time series against the Colonials.
- Be Pitt's first against George Washington since March 19, 2016, snapping a five-meet losing streak in the series for the Panthers.
- Improve the Panthers' record to 7-0 when facing the Colonials in Pittsburgh.
- Mark Pitt's first East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) win of the 2019 season, improving to 1-1.
LAST TIME OUT
- Sophomore Haley Brechwald and junior Alecia Petrikis tied for the individual high scores on vault as the Pitt completed its first road meet of the season at the University of New Hampshire (Jan. 18). Brechwald and Petrikis each earned a score of 9.800 to win on vault, landing in a three-way tie with New Hampshire's Nicole O'Leary.
- The wins mark the first individual titles of the season for the pair of Panthers. The win is Brechwald's first on vault since Pitt's 2018 season opener, and it is the first for Petrikis since the Panthers hosted New Hampshire Jan. 20, 2018.
- As a team, the Panthers placed second in the quad meet, just behind the host Wildcats. Pitt earned a team score of 193.725 as New Hampshire came out on top at 194.925. The Panthers defeated Bridgeport (193.575) and Temple (191.850).
- Four Panthers recoded season or career high scores on balance beam, including senior Lucy Brett (9.875 – season high), freshman Kiley Robatin (9.875 – career high), senior Brittany West (9.875 – career high), and Brechwald (9.850 – season high).
THE "VAULT" IN OUR STARS
- With an average team score of 48.600, Pitt leads the EAGL on vault. The Panthers earned a season-high score of 48.950 in the season opener (Jan. 12) in Pittsburgh.
- Sophomore Haley Brechwald is tied for the league lead with an average score of 9.825, most recently winning the event at New Hampshire (Jan. 18) at 9.800.
- Teammate Alecia Petrikis ranks third in the conference at 9.813 and tied Brechwald for the event win at UNH.
RANKING THE PANTHERS
- Following its first road meet of the season, Pitt ranks No. 35 in the nation according to RoadToNationals.com.
- The Panthers are third in the EAGL with an average team score of 194.238, behind NC State (194.435) and North Carolina (194.663).
FASHION STATEMENT
- Pitt's leotards were ranked first by College Gym News in back-to-back weekly polls.
- The Panthers wore Pitt Script leotards for their home-opening quad meet (Jan. 12) and debuted Pitt Retro leotards on the road at New Hampshire (Jan. 18). The Script leos earned a score of 9.233 by panelists, and the Retro leos scored an 8.700.
PITT VERSUS GEORGE WASHINGTON
- Saturday will be the 33rd meeting between the Colonials and the Panthers, with the series tied, 16-16.
- George Washington has won the last five meetings between the teams, with the Panthers' last win coming March 19, 2016, at Fitzgerald Field House. Pitt is unbeaten all-time when facing GW in Pittsburgh, at 6-0.
- Last season, the Colonials claimed both meetings between the teams. Most recently, the Panthers fell to GW at the 2018 EAGL Championships (195.475-195.875).
SCOUTING THE COLONIALS
- George Washington's meet at Kent State, set for Jan. 20, was postponed due to inclement weather. The Colonials last competed Jan. 13 at North Carolina's Lindsey Ferris Invitational, placing second in the quad meet.
- North Carolina finished first with a score of 194.175, while GW came in a close second with a 193.525 behind team scores of 47.875 on vault, 48.175 on bars, 48.675 on beam, and 48.800 on floor. Ball State (193.200) finished third and Cornell (190.750) took fourth.

- The Panthers will stay home and face North Carolina and Temple for a tri-meet Friday, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m. at Fitzgerald Field House. The meet will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra, available on the WatchESPN app.
