Panthers Wrap Up Strong Showing At The Nittany Lion Challenge

UNIVERSITY PARK – The University of Pittsburgh track & field teams returned to action on Saturday afternoon at the Nittany Lion Challenge hosted by Penn State. The Panthers had one individual and two relay champions on Saturday in their first meet in over a month.
Sophomore Nikki Scherer put together her best run of the season in the 400m race as she was able to claim the victory with a time of 56.23 seconds. The Panthers also saw Flora Ahiarakwe take home third place in 57.56 seconds and Aysha Muhammad placed seventh in 58.24 seconds.
In the 60m hurdles final, three Panthers on the men's side earned top-seven finishes as Shyheim Wright led the way with a third place finish in 8.07 seconds. Cobe Wiggins finished in sixth place in 8.54 seconds and Seth Spino placed seventh, finishing in 8.58 seconds. In the women's 60m hurdles final, Muhammad led the way with a third place finish in 8.64 seconds while freshman Eddita Pessima placed sixth in 8.81 seconds.
Freshman Sydni Townsend had a very impressive showing in the 800m run as she posted a personal-best time of 2:13.70 while earning a second place finish while senior Erin O'Connell took home fourth place in 2:17.67. In the men's 800m race, Evan Addison had a strong showing as he earned a fourth place finish in 1:56.58.
In the 600m races, Dante' Watson claimed fourth place in 1:19.26 on the men's side while Monica McNeil took home eighth place in 1:38.15 for the Pitt women. Matt Wilson posted a sixth place finish in the 400m race in 49.68 seconds while Taylor Middleton placed sixth in the 60m dash in 7.69 seconds.
The Panthers had two relay teams earn victories on Saturday as the women's 4x800m relay quartet of Emily Burd, O'Connell, Erin Keelan and Caelin Miller earned the win in 9:26.35 and the men's 4x800m quartet of Drew Glick, Nate Sloan, Evan Addison and Zach Lefever claimed victory in 7:48.23.
The women's 4x400m relay team of Scherer, Ahiarakwe, Nina Crawford and Townsend had a strong performance as they took home second place in 3:46.48 while the men's 4x400m squad of Watson, Wilson, Ade Jones-Roundtree and Lonzell Feagin finished in sixth place in 3:21.18.
In the field events, a trio of sophomores had strong finishes for the Panthers as Greg Lauray took home sixth place in the long jump with a leap of 6.48m while Noah Walker took sixth place in the weight throw with a heave of 16.38m and Antoinette Gyles placed 10th in the women's weight throw with a toss of 15.31m.

The Panthers will hit the road next weekend as they head to Blacksburg, VA to take part in the Hokie Invitational on Friday, Jan. 18 and Saturday, Jan. 19.
