Watson Claims Title As Pitt Concludes Hokie Invitational

BLACKSBURG, VA – The Pitt track and field team finished off their weekend at the Hokie Invitational hosted by Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon with one individual and one relay team victory. The Panthers also saw two individuals hit ACC qualifying standards during the two-day meet inside the Rector Field House.
Junior Dante' Watson had a great performance on Friday evening as he earned an individual victory in the 600m run, finishing in 1:19.55. Drew Glick posted a third place finish in the same race as he posted a season-best time of 1:20.23 while Matt Wilson took home seventh place in 1:21.43.
The women's 4x400m relay quartet of Flora Ahiarakwe, Nikki Scherer, Breanna Phillips and Sydni Townsend finished strong and earned the win as they finished in a season-best time of 3:43.92.
The Panthers saw two athletes hit ACC qualifying standards on the weekend as Kollin Smith took home sixth place in the long jump with a season-best leap of 7.22m while Taylor Middleton posted a sixth place finish in the long jump with a season-best leap of 6.11m.
On the women's side, the Panthers saw five athletes collect top-10 finishes on the weekend as Miranda Salvo posted a season-best time of 2:13.49 in the 800m run, claiming second place, while also notching a sixth place finish in the mile run, finishing in a season-best time of 4:49.71. In the 5000m run, Sarah Frick notched second place, finishing in 18:44.58. Townsend finished off her strong weekend with a third place finish in the 600m run, as her time of 1:31.54 is the second fastest time in school history. Ahiarakwe was able to record a sixth place finish in the 400m run, clocking in with a time of 56.53 seconds, setting a personal record for the freshman.
Pitt saw five men claim top-five finishes in track events on the weekend as Nate Sloan, Glick and Watson finished 3-4-5 in the 800m run. Sloan led the Panthers with a season-best time of 1:52.34 while claiming third place while Glick collected fourth and Watson notched fifth. In distance races, Tyler Rollins was able to take home third place in the 5000m race, finishing in 15:03.18, while Zach Lefever notched fifth place in the 3000m run, posting a season-best time of 8:28.90.
The lone Pitt field athlete to earn a top-five finish was Greg Lauray who claimed second place in the high jump as he cleared a height of 2.06m.
The men's 4x400m relay team of Watson, Wilson, Lauray and Ken Brosier were able to take home fifth place in a season-best time of 3:20.97.
The Panthers will return to the track next weekend as they head to University Park, PA for the Penn State National Open on Friday and Saturday.
