Former Pitt Infielder Plans to Attend Dental School
PITTSBURGH – A star for the Panthers on and off the field, 2018 University of Pittsburgh baseball alumnus Caleb Parry has been awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Parry will receive $7,500 toward his continuing education.
Parry graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Pittsburgh in April with a degree in biological sciences, earning minors in applied statistics, chemistry and administration of justice. He plans to pursue a career as a dentist and will attend Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, Calif. in the fall.
Parry was one of 29 male winners across all three NCAA Divisions for the spring season. He is one of just six baseball student-athletes to receive the award and one of only three NCAA Division I baseball players to earnt eh distinction.
"I am beyond honored to have received this award from the NCAA. Being a student-athlete is so much more than the glitz and glam that the public sees," Parry said. "There are many hours spent dedicated to your studies on and off the field, and this is a sign that those countless hours have truly paid off.
"I want to thank my professors, teammates and coaches, as well as the Athletic Department here at Pitt. I would not have been able to achieve anything without those people pouring their heart and soul into their job. I am extremely thankful to have had the opportunity to represent this beautiful University both in competition and in the classroom. As always, Hail to Pitt!"
Parry was one of the most prolific position players to wear a Pitt uniform, playing a significant role in the infield in his five seasons as a Panther. He wrapped up his career ranked in the top 20 of the Pitt record books in games played (169, 14th), games started (149, 16th), at bats (560, 17th) and doubles (30, 20th).
In his redshirt junior season, he led the Pitt offense with 58 hits and 47 RBI, starting all 53 games as a first baseman and designated hitter for the Panthers. The year prior, he appeared in 42 games, starting 37, tallying 22 RBI, eight doubles and two homers.
One of the top highlights of his career came in his final season, as he scored the game winning run in Pitt's upset over top-seeded North Carolina in the elimination game of the 2018 ACC Baseball Championship. He used a seven-pitch at bat to draw a walk, moving to third on a double and scurrying home to score on a squeeze bunt that would eventually send the Panthers into the semifinal round of their first ACC tournament.
Parry was named the academic team captain of the team in the fall of 2014 and maintained that role through his graduation. He was a two-year member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, a four-time Pitt Scholar-Athlete Gold Award recipient, a four-time ACC Honor Roll Honoree and a 2017 All-ACC Academic recipient.
To qualify for an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, student-athletes must be in their final year of eligibility and plan to pursue graduate studies within the next three years. In addition to maintaining at least a 3.2 grade-point average, they must perform with distinction in their sport and be nominated by their institution's faculty athletics representative (FAR).
