Shields, Wolk Lead Panthers in University Park, Pa.
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Pitt men's and women's cross country teams wrapped their second visit to Penn State at the National Open Friday morning on the Blue/White Golf Courses. The Panthers will visit Penn State once more this season to compete in the 2018 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional on Nov. 9.
Pitt competed alongside a combined 11 nationally ranked opponents. The men's team placed 17th with 448 points, and the women took 21st with 603 points.
In the women's 6K, junior Sam Shields finished first for the Panthers for the second consecutive meet, in 36th place overall with a time of 21:17. Senior Natalie Hilton finished next for Pitt with a time of 22:03, followed by freshman Devon Hoernlein (22:26). Hilton and Hoernlein placed 113th and 143rd in out of more than 190 athletes.
"On the women's side, Sam Shields had a solid race that just got away from her in the last kilometer. Our group is still not pushing up to the door we need to be at in the race and we must learn to execute on race day," Pitt coach Brad Herbster said.
Junior Nick Wolk finished the men's 5.2 mile race in 28th place overall with a time of 25:37, being the first Panther to cross the finish line. Sophomore Zach Lefever placed within the top 100, in 62nd place with a time of 26:05. Freshman Brian Spolarich followed, taking third for the Panthers (106th, 26:34).
"For the men, it is really about competing throughout the entire race. We let it get away from us in a few key moments," Herbster said. "A lot of improvement is needed in the next two weeks as we prepare for the ACC Championship."
