Panthers to Compete in Four Fall Invitationals
PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh head tennis coach Alex Santos announced that the Panthers will compete in four invitationals this fall.
The schedule features the Miami Fall Invite, Wildcat Invite, ITA Regional Championship and the Harvard Invitational.
"I am definitely excited for our fall schedule but most importantly about the team," Santos said. "I feel we have a group of girls that will make the most out of every single opportunity, while embracing the challenge and the joy of competing at the highest level. We will be having a little bit of everything throughout our fall segment: from the warm weather of Miami, to the volume of matches at Northwestern, to Regionals, to the indoor tennis at Harvard. Hopefully that will lead us to our ultimate goal which is to being a team that wants to win each and every point."
The Panthers open the fall season Friday, Sept. 22 at the Miami Fall Invite in Coral Gables, Fla., with competition wrapping up Sunday, Sept. 24. Pitt compiled a record of 13-18 through the weekend, but was highlighted by notable wins from junior Gabriela Rezende in singles.
The team will then head north to the Wildcat Invite on the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. Action is slated to begin Friday, Sept. 29 and conclude Sunday, Oct. 1. Senior Callie Frey and Rezende were two of three Panthers to conclude the weekend with winning records.
Pitt continues competition Friday, Oct. 13 at the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships in Blacksburg, Va., on the campus of Virginia Tech. For more information on Regionals, click here.
The Panthers wrap-up the fall season with a trip to Cambridge, Mass., for the Harvard Invitational. The final tune-up begins Friday, Nov. 3 and concludes Sunday, Nov. 5. The team collected five singles wins over Harvard a year ago, while also claiming four matches over ACC-foe Syracuse.
Pitt returns five veteran players from 2016-17 including leaders in Frey and Rezende. The Panthers roster also welcomes new faces in junior transfer Luisa Varon and freshmen Claudia Bartolome and Camila Moreno.
