EVANSTON, Ill. – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team concluded day one of the Wildcat Invite Friday evening at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.
"Gabriela [Rezende] and Jovana [Knezevic] are doing an amazing job in doubles," said head coach Alex Santos. "They have so much poise, intensity and energy on every point that they are playing. I am also proud of Natsumi [Okamoto] because she has been working very hard at practice and with that comes great belief and toughness on match day. Clara [Lucas] is showing many positive strides and today she just took care of business. The key for tomorrow will be the demand the girls put on themselves in terms of making one more ball when things get close."
Senior Callie Frey and junior Natsumi Okamoto both opened the tournament with wins in singles play, in addition to junior Clara Lucas who opened round robin match-ups with a victory.
Frey outlasted Northwestern's Caroline Pozu 7-6 (2), 6-1, while Okamoto defeated Nathalie Joanlanne of Montana 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. Both will play in the semifinals Saturday.
Lucas earned a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Julia Fenn from Michigan State.
In doubles play, the pair of Gabriela Rezende and Jovana Knezevic earned two wins on the day taking down Margo Pletcher and Whitney Turley of Utah 7-5 in the opener, before defeating Fleur Eggink and Natalija Popovic of Marquette 6-4.
In round robin play, Lucas and Okamoto defeated Bianca Zuzu and Ameliam Guevremont of UIC 6-2.
