Panthers Fall Short to Notre Dame

ROME, Ga. - The 2016-17 season came to a close Wednesday afternoon as the Pitt tennis team fell 4-0 to Notre Dame in the opening round of the ACC Championships at the Rome Tennis Center.
Two Panthers were able to take sets from their Irish foes, but it wouldn't be enough.
"We battle today and we played a competitive match," said head coach Alex Santos. "It comes down to details and to fight in the most adverse situations of the match and that is something that Notre Dame did better than us."
Notre Dame came out of the gates strong, clinching the doubles point. The tandem of senior Audrey Ann Blakely and sophomore Clara Lucas dropped a 6-3 decision on court two. The Irish then captured its second win on court one as the veteran team of redshirt senior Amber Washington and junior Callie Frey dropped a 6-4 decision. Washington and Frey were able to tie the match on three different occasions, but couldn't hold off ND's Mary Closs and Monica Robinson.
In singles, Lucas was the first Panther to fall as she dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Closs at the No. 5 position. Notre Dame then jumped out to a 3-0 lead after freshman Jovana Knezevic fell 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6.
The Irish sealed the deal with a win on court two as Blakely fell 6-1, 7-5. Blakely was making a good comeback in the second set, but it wouldn't be enough.
Washington and Monica Robinson were preparing to head to the third set at No. 1 as Washington took the first set 6-4 and Robinson took the second, 7-5, but the match was abandoned.
Frey was also heading to a third set as she took the first 6-4 and dropped the second 6-2.
