Panthers Fall to Cavaliers

PITTSBURGH - Although clinching the doubles point, the Pitt tennis team fell short 5-2 to ACC foe Virginia Friday evening at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center.
With the loss, the Panthers move to 3-13 on the year while Virginia improves to 9-10 overall.
In its final home dual of the season, Pitt jumped out to a 1-0 lead after clinching the doubles point. The veteran tandem of redshirt senior Amber Washington and junior Callie Frey turned in the first win at No. 1 as they defeated Rosie Johanson and Meghan Kelley, 6-3. Sophomore Gabriela Rezende and freshman Jovana Knezevic locked up the doubles point after posting a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles, taking down Hunter Bleser and Camille Favero.
The Cavaliers tied up the dual 1-1 after No. 48 Rosie Johanson defeated Washington, 6-3, 6-0, at the No. 1 singles position. Virginia went on to take the next two singles matches to clinch the dual, 4-1.
Frey posted the lone singles win on the day for the Panthers as she outlasted her Cavalier opponent, 7-6(3), 7-6(5), at the No. 4 position.
In the last match standing, sophomore Clara Lucas fell in three sets at No. 6 but not without a fight. Lucas took the first set 6-4, but fell 6-4, 7-6 bringing the final score to 5-2 in favor of the visitors.
Pitt hits the road Sunday to take on No. 45 Miami at 10 a.m.
