DURHAM, N.C. - The Pitt tennis team was blanked 7-0 by the 17th-ranked Duke Blue Devils Saturday afternoon at the Ambler Tennis Stadium.
Duke started the day strong by clinching the doubles point after earning wins on court three, 6-1, followed by a 6-4 win on court one.
"I felt that we could have managed the doubles point better," said head coach Alex Santos. "We jumped to a great start on all courts but struggled with maintaining the energy and competing relentlessly on every point. In singles, I give credit to Duke for exposing our weaknesses. We will need to regroup emotionally and get ready for NC State tomorrow."
The Blue Devils collected singles victories on courts 1, 3, and 2 to clinch the dual, 4-0. All wins were by straight sets. Duke tacked on two more straight-set victories on courts five and six, bringing the score to 6-0.
Junior Callie Frey was the last Panther to finish on the day as she was also the only Pitt player to win a set. Frey, taking on Alyssa Smith on court four, dropped the first set 6-0, but bounced back to take the second 7-6 (5) before falling in the tiebreaker 10-6.
The Panthers have a quick turnaround as they remain in North Carolina to take on the NC State Wolfpack Sunday, April 2 at noon.
